The big club event at Sutton Park came around and it brought a multitude of weathers with it. With a group of new names to ensure our women’s teams were full we had 18 ready and raring to go. Despite numerous call outs for the men we could field only one full team, leaving a disappointment to the 10 men who ran as an unplaced incomplete team.

40 athletes and numerous supporters meant we were noticeable by our colours out on course and by our noise on the finish straight. The two captains arrived early on site to grab the best vantage point and then with three more joining us we were set up and ready for the troops to arrive.

With only one no show on the day it went fairly smoothly. A big shout out to Andy for swapping teams and a guest appearance meant we kept as many vests out there as possible.

A long day, but a great club day, showing off the best aspects of the club. Well done all and thank you for your co-operation. You made all the difference – Spencer

Gloucester Half Marathon – 22 March HM

725 Sally Eason 01:43:13 1st FV60
744 Rob Cox 01:43:35

Sunny but cool conditions, perfect for running. The course starts with a couple of miles looping round the city centre before heading out on a very long straight road to the southern suburbs where it passes through several estate roads eventually reaching some pleasant country lanes.

The return is more scenic including several stretches along the Gloucester canal finally reaching the smart dock redevelopment. The last mile or so loops back round the City Centre to the park. I mnaged to keep pace with Sally until the final half mile when she kicked for home.

Overall a well-organised event and a pretty flat course good for anyone chasing a time – Rob

The Pendulum, Northumberland – 22 March OTH

  David Tittle 03:54:00

The legendary Pendulum. 600m ascent and descent of the Cheviot followed by 500m ascent and descent of the Cheviot’s little sister Hedgehope. The latter is very steep, hence 3:54 to complete just over 18km.

A lovely, friendly event. I lost count of the number of people who called out my name because they recognised the Northbrook top.

CaniTrail 50 – 21 March OTH

  Louise Forde 17:50:00

Llanharan village hall start point then all round Rhondda Cynon Taf region.

7am — 12 of us set off on our toughest challenge yet, 50 miles of Welsh hills, peat bogs, streams, sunshine, and more hills. Buddy started full of excitement; straight into puddles within the first 5K — no surprise there. First climbs were tough, and the peat bogs were relentless, every “solid” step ended up being knee-deep.

Checkpoint 1 with Euan — snacks, a quick reset, then back out. Sheep tried to follow us for a bit, but Buddy was perfect. Gawr Forest was brutal — heat, no shade and constant climbing. We kept detouring for water to cool down. Huge respect to the motocross riders who stopped and walked past us.

By Checkpoint 2, the heat hit Buddy, so he had a rest in the van. I carried on solo, powered by sweets.
Checkpoint 3 — he was still snoozing, so I pushed on, straight into the steepest hill at 32 miles. Then surrounded by curious cows. Glad Buddy wasn’t there.

As it got dark, heading towards the wind farm, I got a bit lost. Everything looked the same and I ended up hopping a fence to get back on track . I picked Buddy up again for the final 10 miles. He was fresh – I was not.
The last climbs felt endless, and Llantrisant Forest had me lost again. I was very glad I wasn’t alone with all the noises in there!

Then finally — the lights of Llanharan. Home straight. Ran into the village at midnight, pushing the last bit.
51 miles. 17 hours 11 minutes. So proud of Buddy. Every mile, every session — worth it.

Fallout, Blewbury – 21 March OTH

  Alan Smith 09:45:00 40.19 miles

The concept is simple; after getting a 30-minute head start where the instructions were RLF, the nuclear cloud starts expanding in real time at around 3.5 miles an hour, sometimes speeding up randomly. The goal is to get to the 40 mile "as the crow flies" line and not get caught by the cloud. This year they had additional random nuclear strikes on the hour every hour, which muck up people’s planned routes. Route planning is key, so I planned as straight a route as possible heading to Banbury, but I hadn’t noticed that from mile 16 to mile 31 it was uphill all the way! The hazmat suit I’d been given to wear lasted all of 4 miles because of the heat, and it ended up in the bin.

The first half was spent mostly running whilst the 2nd half was a mixture of running and walking, with only a few misturns where I had to back track. The section along the Oxford canal was especially pleasant with the added bonus of lots of water taps.

Approaching Banbury I noticed a nuclear strike blocking my road, so had to divert over fields to avoid it. When I got to Banbury it was dark, my legs were gone, and the prospect of another 5 miles to the safety line was not in the slightest bit appealing, especially as it would have left me in the middle of nowhere with 5 miles back to Banbury train station. The cloud was quite a way behind me, but even that wasn’t incentive enough to walk the last 5., so So I decided to call it a day in Banbury and headed for the train.

I was very disappointed to find out that McDonald’s was nowhere near, but at the train station I bumped into a fellow runner who had bailed at 35 miles and who kindly gave me a slice of his pizza. 40 real miles completed, but not "as the crow flies", so officially a DNF.

Enigma Week at the Knees Marathon – 15 March M

15 Claudie Combelas 04:54:52

After only managing to get up to 14 miles in distance in training since October’s 101st marathon and amidst continuing health challenges, I thought I needed to see if I could manage a long run ahead of the Twin Lakes 20, so I entered Enigma Running’s run at Caldecote Lake today. The aim was to see how many laps I could manage.

I am absolutely chuffed to have done 7.5 laps and therefore completed the marathon. I even got in in under five hours.

37 Sally Eason 01:06:44 1st FV60

As regular visitors to the area this event has been on our wishlist for some time. Having finally got ourselves organised to be in the area on the right weekend we were delighted to get the one sunny day between mainy rainy ones.

The course runs along minor lanes on either side of the dale with numerous sharp inclines and deep puddles. The sun was shining and the views were spectacular – Rob

Sandymount Nightrun 10k, Dublin – 3 March 10K

  David Tittle 00:57:46

A popular event along south Dublin’s seafront. Once round a sports park and then down on to the beach and back along the promenade. 10k runners do two laps. There were bottlenecks at times and the beach was not a great surface, but otherwise a well-organised event.

457th out of 845 finishers (gun time).

The day after the Awards Night and for the few of us present who had indulged the night before the times reflected it. Quite luckily the majority of the Centurion runners from Northbrook were well behaved the night before or took the clever option to race prepare. Great running by all in the sunburst with a splattering of age group podiums.
Well done all – Spencer

My first race with Northbrook. The route was changed on the day due to bad weather conditions – Jessica

  Matthew Hall 01:32:00

A climb of 1125ft to the top of Bosley Cloud just outside Congleton. Boggy fields, electric fence and views to die for (nearly did at the top!). Just another 38 miles to add for the big one in May.

Canicross Midlands Bury Farm Long Course, Day 2 – 1 MarchOTH

  Louise Forde 00:28:01

Day 2 was a bit cooler and cloudier today for the boys. I was running on empty after a long week, but they put in a good effort, 2 mins 36 seconds slower than yesterday. I felt like I just couldn’t get the sprint into my legs. But all our training since August has been long, steady runs ready for all our Ultras, and after completing a 43.26 mile ultra together a week ago.
