Canicross Midlands Bury Farm Long Course, Day 1 – 28 FebruaryOTH

  Louise Forde 00:25:25

A 5k race at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre, all on private farmland tracks. One of the flattest Canicross Midlands races I’ve been to. It got a bit worm out on the big open field in he sun, so the dogs eased off a bit, but other than that they put in a really good effore for Day 1 of racing.

The last cross-country fixture of the season and it was the big one. The Nationals being held up in County Durham for the first time in a long time. With enough interest to ensure we could field teams our seasoned “mud dwellers” headed North. Some travelling up to family, some up for the competition, all up for the experience.

The event was unusually well planned. From plenty of parking, to tent/kit transportation, to a navigatable site. And with just over 4 km of course taped, and very friendly and supportive marshalls it was a success. All of Northbrook turned up and our cheer squads made sure they could be heard. A great run by all on a long course in great conditions, even if the front end was remarkably quick.

Then came the weekend event everyone looked forward to. The pub after for beers and food. Looking round the table you could see the glow of all of the runners and supporters.

What a day, what a club – Spencer

Rubber Ducky Dash, Staines-on-Thames – 21 FebruaryOTH

  Matthew Hathrell 06:36:58 10 laps, 43.7 miles

A 7-hour challenge, running 7k out and back loops on the Thames Path. I wanted 12 laps for a double marathon, and ran well for the first 6 (marathon in 3:13) but fell apart a bit after that, I think due to insufficient fuelling. Had time to do lap 11, but not 12, and 10 felt like a happy round number so was ready to call it a day.

Must be one of the coldest runs – ever! 16.45 miles of hills, snow, sleet and driving rain – Matthew

What a morning! Rain, sleet, snow and wind, not to mention the hills. Perfect conditions for a race. The end couldn’t come soon enough. It took hours to warm up. Would we do it again, probably – Jo and Julie

Valentines Massacre, Alcester – 14 February10K

  Louise Forde

A 10km around the Purity brewing farm. It was tough going, super hilly and
super muddy. On the massive downhill I did slightly regret my choice of running
2 dogs, but the boys are very well trained with their back commands.

With a fantastic team of 24 women giving their all on Saturday at the final cross-country League race, it was a day to remember. The course was incredibly muddy, with puddles of water at the start, more strategically placed puddles all the way to the finish line, and even the added bonus of running through the bomb crater.

Natasha led us home in first place for the third time this season — an incredible achievement. She was followed by Amanda, who battled it out with the juniors and seniors on the course. Both have had a brilliant season, giving their all for the team every step of the way.

Natalia crossed the line as our third runner, with Abi, in her first ever league race, coming in as our fourth. She was closely followed by Sally, rounding out a strong team performance at the front of the field.

What a season it’s been. As a team, we exceeded expectations. We had hoped we might sneak a fifth-place finish for promotion, but to finish 2nd overall is an amazing result to be proud of! Our Masters team position is still to be confirmed, but it looks like we may have taken 1st place there too.

A huge well done as well to the rest of our incredible team, who had the tough job of holding off other teams from gaining points and who dug deep to gain or protect their positions right to the finish:
Lisa Bothwell, Ellie Aldridge, Gemma Beahan, Mollie Williams, Jennifer Ennis, Louise Forde, Dawn O’Shea, Michelle Edwards, Ruth Hallett, Victoria Boyle, Vanessa Warren, Julie Cozens, Joanne Evans, Caroline Young, Tracy Jefferson, Joanna Grace, Carol Bull, Tracey Williams, Kelly Parker, and Judith Haley.

Every single runner played a part in this result, and every position truly mattered.

As we were hosting the event alongside Sphinx, we also had the job of setting up the start and finish area, which meant a very early start and staying behind after the men’s race to pack everything away. A huge thank you to Simon, Ruth, Rob, Debbie, Tommy, Tracy, and Daisy for all your help, I really couldn’t have done it without you all.

Thank you as well to everyone who supported and cheered throughout the cross country season. It all makes a difference. What a team, and what a season – Joanne

Race 3 came around and the men knew our backs were against the wall. The men had stepped up, with 2 heros stepping in having never having run cross-country before and 2 who had not run this season to date. The injured, the ill, those with niggles we all turned up, 31 in total and the biggest turnout in Race 3 of any of the clubs. We had quality through the field from the front end to the train at the back of the race.

The conditions were awful, it suited some, it did not suit others. Slipping and sliding was the standard. The men gave it everything on the day we could not have given any more. They were covered in mud splatters, broken bodies littering the changing rooms afterwards, many with shocked faces.

I could not have asked anymore from the band of brothers. Our strength, our team, our camaraderie gives us hope for next year when we can bounce.

Thank you and well done guys – Spencer

  Clare King 06:05:46 10 laps, 33 miles

  Louise Forde* 01:57:08 3 laps, 10.06 miles

Another top quality 6-hour event from Big Bear. This was only my second but the organisation is superb and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
Very happy with my consistent pacing and fuelling and covered around 33 miles, coming in 4th overall and 2nd female – Clare

Rainy, muddy, misty and cold. A typical day. Wasn’t feeling well so was pleased to get that far – Claudie

My original plan was to do 5-6 laps as I was using it as warm-up to our 50 miler in Wales on 21st March.
Unfortunately we only managed 3 laps as half-way round the 3rd lap an offlead dog rushed at Buddy, causing him to react, which ruined the positive lovely run we were having together. So, as he had finally settled down near the end of the lap we decided to call it a day and end it before any other dogs triggered him further. We did a total of 10.06 miles in 1:57:08 – Louise
