CLAUDIE COMBELAS

My daughter Natalie had kindly entered the whole family for this boxing running festival in one of the large parks in Doha. There were distances for all from 2.5k, 5k to 10k. Participants from age 2 to over 70. 800 runners from 55 nations took part. All received a medal, a tshirt and a bag.

Having only run the Ilmington race since October I was rather apprehensive. The runs started at 7am to avoid the heat of the day. The 10k was a two lapper with a couple of hills. I was thrilled with my result as it’s my best 10k in a while.

My grandson got gold in his age group for 2.5k, my daughter got silver for under 40s in 2.5k and I got a bronze medal for my age group – over 40s. We all had to stand on the podium in turn to get our medals which was great fun. I’ll definitely have another go next year.

The Gaddesby Gallop delivered exactly what its reputation promises; 5.25 miles of proper cross-country running that left no one dry, clean, or short of stories. From the off it was clear this wasn’t going to be a gentle Saturday jog. The route wound its way across open countryside, hopping stiles and churning through ploughed fields that grabbed at tired legs and tested balance from the very first mile. Just when a rhythm began to form, the course reminded us who was in charge.

The dewpond crossing was the first real shock to the system — knee-deep, bitterly cold, and impossible to tiptoe through without an involuntary gasp. Any lingering feeling in the toes was quickly erased. Not long after came the drop into the drainage ditch and the unforgettable passage through the murky watery tunnel, dark, slick, and guaranteed to soak even the most careful runner. If anyone thought the worst was over, the course had other ideas. A small stream provided a brief splash-through before the main event — the river wading. Waist-high water, numbing cold, and a strong current turned progress into a slow, determined slog, with plenty of laughter, grimaces, and mutual encouragement as everyone hauled themselves out the far side. From there it was a hard-earned climb over the final hill, legs heavy but spirits lifted by the sound of church bells drifting across the fields. The finish funnel offered the perfect reward, the unmistakable smell of fresh coffee and bacon sandwiches pulling runners home for the last push.

On the results front, Matt put in a superb performance to bring home second place, navigating the chaos with strength and composure. Just as impressive was the huge turnout of newcomers, many tackling the Gallop for the first time, who took on the course with grit, good humour, and a clear sense of achievement at the finish.

The day ended exactly as it should, a pint or two in the pub with animated tales being retold – Spencer

Northbrook Women’s Masters Team – 1st

The women’s team delivered an exceptional performance yesterday on a tough, undulating course at Cofton Park, claiming 1st place in both the Masters team category and the Overall team competition.

3rd – Amanda Deavy (27:25)

Natasha also took 1st place overall, with Rhian and Amanda finishing 3rd and 4th overall, showing incredible strength on the steep climbs and fast descents.

Strong, determined running throughout the field secured the team victory, with excellent performances from Samantha Ryan, Sally Eason, Lisa Bothwell, Michelle Edwards, Louise Forde, Julie Cozens, Joanne Evans, Ruth Hallett, Victoria Boyle (40th Senior), Joanna Grace, Tracy Jefferson, Tracey Williams, Jen Stafford, Kelly Parker, and a gritty finish from Judith Haley completing the lineup.

Every contribution counted on this challenging course,  a superb display of teamwork, strength and resilience on one of the hillier courses of the season – Joanne Evans

Race 2, and with our backs to the wall we bought in new signings to boost the ranks. The build up had been wet, and the sponginess of the course reflected it, with the water crossing being higher than previous races there.

We could not ask for more from the men as 30 of us and supporters headed down to the lesser known Birmingham district of Cheltenham. For weeks there had been a battle behind the scenes regarding marshalling duties and with a late resolution to the issue, our 13th man Bob Adams stepped in to save the 200 points.

In a race dominated by Loughborough our men gave it their all, some full of cold, 1 due an MRI the day after they turned up and they did everything they could.
Despite a better team score on the day by over 200 points, we took a hit in the overall series as our competitor just above us scored well too.

More to give and more expectation guys. Burton Dassett is on the horizon and step up the hill climbers. The tough course to come will be season-defining.

Rest well you band of brothers, because in January we reform to climb – Spencer
