What a day for my 3rd and last London Marathon. A hot one no matter where we raced but especially warm in London. We were well-catered for with cool showers every few miles, a least 12 water stations, plus lucozade gels and drinks.

So, a finish time of 5hr 35m, my longest marathon for duration. Is that a new way to call a PB? My quads and calves are now very stiff in both legs but the right hip is “ok” considering it’s pending replacement on May 23rd. It’s like I’m suffering from “not training” up to my normal 20 mile distance. I guess this is to be expected and really my plans worked. Not wanting to overdo training distance and save itfor the day to protect my hip. I finished exactly when I said “I’ll be on the Mall by 5pm” – I got over the line at 4:57pm. Took the pain killers, kept hydrated, walked when I needed to and did some stretches to free muscle cramping.

The crowds were unbelievable, we ran through a sea of humanity constantly cheering as we enjoyed being stars for the day. A key Northbrook support crew were there for us at 12 miles & 23 miles and whilst I was running “out of club colours” for the PSPA charity they were key tonic points in my run to get me over the line – amazing support.

In the past few weeks since my diagnosis of osteoarthritis in my right hip I have sometimes faced the cynical comments like ”that’s what running does for you”. Well as the consultant said running does not cause arthritis, it’s genetic. Whilst impact sports can be said not to help, the health benefits far outweigh that risk, helping bone density, keeping a healthy weight and cardiovascular system. I would do the same again having started running in 2006 – I’m sure you would all do the same. I have been able to run because the severe arthritic patch (bone on bone) is on the side of my ball joint not the top. It hurts most when I twist or hit uneven ground – anyway next up for me is the titanium upgrade and I shall be back gently running again in the Autumn.

Thanks once again to all those who sponsored me in honour of my Mum and also for all your supportive chats and social media messages as I have trained with many of you – Kevin

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

Another early start to get to Caldecotte Lake, Milton Keynes, this time with sore legs despite stretching and application of magnesium. Again I did not look at my watch. Legs felt heavy and the same course felt a lot harder.

The last two laps were a real effort, so imagine my surprise when my time was a minute faster than the day before! Obviously I spent less time at the stop (every 3.3 miles – you leave your gels/food etc.. there).

Feeling ready for London next Sunday!

Engima Easter Eggstravaganza Marathon, Friday – 18 April M

7 Claudie Combelas 04:32:25

An early start to Milton Keynes for 7.5 laps of 3.3 miles around Caldecote Lake. A small event, well-organised and friendly. I last did this event in January with Amy and it took me 6 hours. I decided to run by feel and not look at my watch. I was hoping for about 5 hour and was astounded to find I finished in 4:32. I even got them to check the time.

I went home happy but apprehensive for the next day!

MARK BAKER

This Good Friday event is one of my favourite races. There’s no fuss and it’s a fast course. I have run there many times at the start of the Easter weekend.

This time, I was pleased to be joined by some other Northbrook runners. Everyone ran well, with Debbie getting a great PB for 10 miles – Mark

The annual Civil Service 10km race was held again in Battersea Park. It started at 3pm on Wednesday afternoon, with 4 laps of the park and a finish on the track.

Tom had a great run to earn a PB for 10km. I enjoyed my second fastest time on the course – Mark

Mersey Tunnel 10k – 13 April 10K

  Sean Duffy 00:44:10

A great and unique race that takes you from Liverpool city centre to New Brighton beach, Wirral via the Wallasey tunnel, no need to get the ferry across the mersey today! First 10k for 3 years so a brilliant one to get back into it all as there was great support across the course and a view of the new Everton stadium across the Mersey.

Leicester’s Big 10k – 13 April 10K

1 Adrian McBride 00:32:23 PB
102 Tim Hughes 00:46:01 PB
228 Spencer Davies 00:53:15
787 Tracey Davies 01:19:05

A small group travelled over to Leicester this week with late entries into the 10k organised by Tempo Events. It is an unusual set-up with the event being split into two races, race 1 for expected time under 50 minutes and race 2 for over 50 minutes.

TIM SMITH

My entry was dropped into the earlier race so I knew I had to watch my early pace to not get dragged along out of my comfort zone. The race organiser has done a cracking job maximising the space of the park to make the loops varied to avoid lapping and re-using the same paths. It looks convoluted from the course map but running made great sense. The course itself is fast and flat, the only thing to be aware of is the handful of steps down onto the canal path at 8.4km.

During the run I was running slightly quicker than planned and somehow managed to hold on for a 90 second 10k PB time. Adrian smashed out a 10k PB to take the overall victory and 1st prize, great for his London Marathon build up. Meanwhile in race 2 Spencer had a solid run on his return from injury and Tracey bringing all the smiles in. All 4 had great runs – Tim

After a successful team relay in 2024, we decided to reform our boy band for 2025. Unfortunately as the event came closer one of us was carrying a bad knock that meant running past 5 miles was an issue.

On the day, Lee got us off to a flying start at a tremendous speed. His feedback of solid ground was much appreciated for those of us further down the course.
He handed on to Paul at 10 miles who made the longest section look easy as he glided along. With plenty of support on route for him he kept the pace going. Malc and I were getting concerned as this pace meant the reality of later checkpoints not being open for our arrival was becoming a possibility.
Paul handed on to me and I dragged my one good leg round the next 10 miles. The plan was that Malc would join me at Ansty in preparation for if my knee went again. It did not, but the fitness was telling and the stiles meant it was a lifting job to get my leg over. I slowed the pace down meaning the checkpoints would be open.

As I passed the tracker to Malc at 10 miles we realised that a 3-mile slow warm up meant we were releasing a beast. With the threat from the Level 1 team hunting us down and Sarah not fading Malc had to work hard. He was that determined we only managed to catch him at 3 points as he pushed on ahead of us. We hoped to see him in but he was too quick meaning Lee had the sole duty of roaring him up the finish.

We were first home, chased in by both Sarah and Tom. A hot and tiring day but with great team spirit thrown in.

Well done guys, great pace by all and you carried a one-legged donkey as well – Spencer

Fantastic team spirit on a beautiful day for running. Conditions underfoot were excellent, support all through the day made it a great social event. Tracey is threatening to do it solo next year, such was the enthusiasm – Chris

After last year’s mudfest, this year we were treated to beautiful sunshine. It was cold at the beginning with frost on the grass, but it soon started to warm up. I ran the first few miles with a bloke from Gateshead who was running his 86th ultra. The first section to Bubbenhall was enjoyable, and I helped the geographically challenged Rav get to his changeover spot unscathed.

As it got hotter, it got more and more difficult. Sections of the course which last year had been rivers of slurry, were rock hard. I walked any bits that were really rutted as I didn’t want to turn my ankle. The soft grass of the canal section was a welcome relief. Arriving at the last checkpoint, I was running on empty, but with "only" 6 miles to go, mostly downhill, I knew I’d finish. Just after this point, I checked the course map on my watch to discover I’d missed a turn, so had to turn around and back track.

It was great to see the finish line, and I got a warm welcome from my fellow Northbrookers. I managed to knock off 1h 6m from last year’s time, finishing in 9h 4m. Had I not made my navigation mistake, I’d have probably gone sub 9. Maybe next year – Alan

Apart from not getting lost much I echo everything that Alan has said. A great day out with lots of Northbrookers supporting and running. As always there were more of us than any other local club and we supported everyone till the end. Here’s hoping for nice weather next year and a fitter body – Claudie
