Cometh the day and 66 Northbrookers stood up to the challenge to represent the club.

It’s always a fast event at Sutton Park, and with all the legs being short this year it was even faster. They seemed to be on the ball with their parking as well. The early team got themselves set up in prime position to ensure the support would be loud and proud.

Our heros on the day arrived early, with 3 drop-outs in advance and their spaces quickly filled we had new and old faces turn up for another Big Northbrook Day Out. There are so many stories about the day it can’t be retold to its entirity, but there are two that stand out. With one no-show our super sub Yvonne epitomised the ethos of the club. As she scurried back to her car to throw on her trainers she had 10 minutes to get to the start. Yvonne being the force that she is, apologizing to everyone that she was going out went out and GOT IT DONE. She may not have claimed the course record but this amazing lady put her club before herself to ensure that a team could complete. Stand up Yvonne we all owe you our thanks.

The other stand out was Paul Curtis. His first Northbrook event and he had a niggle for a week before. He still showed up and started. Unfortunately, a mile in his calf went. Instead of taking the easy option of walking the 400 metres back and not finishing, he dragged his broken body round to completion, ensuring the team finished. Paul got the ethos of what the club are trying to achieve. Stand up Paul, we owe you a Thank You.

The next Big Northbrook day out – the Hilly 100, ensure you are in it to win it – Spencer

CHRIS ARCHER

Claudie and I caught up with erstwhile Northbrook member Amy Burdis and partner Enrik during our European tour and ran the Amsterdam parkrun after another night of rock and roll.

As flat as you’d expect and running through the park and woodland, it was a great start to the day followed by coffee and cake in the park cafe. Another international parkrun ticked off – Chris

Kielder Dark Skies Run – 8 March OTH

  Alan Smith 05:31:46

ALAN SMITH

Part of the Kielder Dark Skies series around Kielder Reservoir which includes an 11 mile run and 10k run. I decided to have a go at the “Kielder Dark Skies Run”. It doesn’t call itself a marathon because the official distance is 26.6 miles, and a last minute tweak to the course, resulted in the distance being increased to almost 28 miles.

The weather was perfect, warm all day on Saturday with clear skies and a chance that the Northern Lights might make an appearance. Unfortunately, the moon was very bright that night, so the patchwork of stars was not as spectacular as I thought it would be. My fitness is well off where I was this time last year, so my plan was just to get round in one piece. The aid stations were excellent. I had been told to make sure I had some of the “Red Cola” at each stop. Apparently red cola is a thing in Scotland, think of Irn Bru with lots of caffeine. It certainly hit the spot, along with sweets, bananas, jaffa cakes, etc.

The run itself was tough but fun and, despite being around a reservoir, it is surprisingly hilly, especially the 2nd half. Starting at 5.30pm, we had about an hour of light before headtorches were required. The temperature dropped quite a lot, so I was glad of the extra mandatory kit I was carrying.

Driving on the way back, I had to swerve to avoid hitting a deer crossing the road, so perhaps all that red cola I drank was a good thing.

Big Bear Elephant Challenge, Salcey Wood – 7 March OTH

This is the furthest I’ve ever ran – Verity

First time doing a Big Bear event. I loved the laps around the forest and having a feed station on each lap if needed – Joanne

A cold frosty morning -1.5. The race started in Jubilee Square, taking you through the sights of Leicester University and Victoria Park and finishing back in Jubilee Square.

The organisers managed to take 10 years off my age by placing me in the wrong category. Wow, I didn’t feel 10 years younger after the race – Caroline

Belvoir Challenge 15 Miles – 1 March OTH

  Kyle Turner 02:52:11
  Tracey Williams 04:18:51
  Jane Ward 04:50:08

Mud mud mud. Nice to run without being fixated on numbers and just enjoy getting round.

The aid stations were stocked with plenty of cakes, sandwiches, treats, biscuits, tea, water and other supplies! A very well organised event and a lot of effort from organisers and volunteers.

Looking forward to some solid ground for a bit now – Kyle
