ALAN SMITH

I’m not usually a fan of lapped races, but as I’d only done 2 competitive races in the last 6 months, I was keen to find one to do, and was struggling to find one at short notice. Mallory Park is only 40 minutes away, and was still open for registrations right up to day of the race.

A decent turnout, with a few hundred doing either the half, 10k or 5k. I went for the 10k given that Warwick Half is coming up soon. It was a bit chilly, and seemed especially cold in the hollow where the race track is situated.

The race consisted of 8 x 1.25km laps, and it was quite nice being able to see the whole route no matter where you were. It was completely flat, and since we were on the race track, the surface was ankle friendly.

A nice goody bag at the end with a selection of snacks and drinks.

Rasselbock Run – Winter 2025, Day 2 – 12 January OTH

  Claudie Combelas 01:21:47

A distance of 11.5km in Sherwood Pines Forest. It was a very very cold and icy day but the forest was beautiful. After a couple of falls, I realised I was too tired and took my lovely medal after two laps. I will certainly re-enter for next year.

Race 3 in the League came around at a new venue for most, and it was a stunning venue, though centuries of grazing cattle had transformed what looked like pleasant green grass from afar to cobbles that were frozen under foot.
The weather had been cold on the run up and the ice ponds meant a few course changes were initiated before the race started.
But, we weren’t put off. 26 hardy men kitted up, laced up, strapped their numbers on and toed the line. There was not much chance of mud, more of frostbite and turned ankles. With a handful of supporters encouraging the men on every step the race was on.

We knew we had our backs against the wall against a rampaging Kenilworth side but we stepped up. Matt led us home, then the sunburst train chased him in. One after another our top 6 took the finish straight; Damien noticeably outsprinting three on the run in and a returning Rich stepping up to finish in 5th place for us. The good news is that our top 6 beat the Kenilworth 6th placed finisher in. The bad news was that their top 5 scored fewer points than our top 5.

We went into the fixture with a lead of 41 points and sat in 3rd place. We head into race 4 still in 3rd place but with a lead of 1 point. A 4th place finish on the day and the line has been drawn. The battleground for the 4th fixture is Coombe Abbey, it’s our fixture. The mission is simple – promotion. Complete that and the legends from this band of brothers will have stories written about them. Tom’s flying shoulder barge from Race 2, Damien’s sprint in Race 3, Matt’s and Tom’s consistency. There are stories about every man from every race. It’s simple, Coombe is a battle and we are bringing it all. Every voice to lift our men up. Every shout of encouragement to drive them on past the person ahead. It may be the 30 + men on the field at Coombe, but the 250 strong club roaring them across that finish line is needed. Get promotion, and the celebration will be messy.

The battle of Coombe is on – Spencer

Braving the sub-zero temperatures were 17 hardy Northbrook women, who navigated fog & ice just to get to the start line. Last year Top Barn was bathed in sunshine, had lovely views across the Malvern Hills and had a spring like feel to it; this year we could barely see each other or the course. Lots of marshalls were required to enable runners to navigate the route. It was cold and foggy and the ground was hard, frosty and treacherous underfoot.

The Northbrook women donned the sunbursts and got stuck in. Amanda Deavy was first home, 9th overall and second Master. Kathryn Adams and Debbie Campbell completed our top three and Michelle Edwards and Natalia Greenhill crossed the line together in joint fourth. It was a great team effort with everyone digging deep to get across the finish line and replenish their energies with Rob Cox’s famous flapjacks.

The team were 9th placed finishers overall, out of 26, with our Masters’ team 7th of 23, two places (4 points behind Sphinx) but ahead of Kenilworth and Massey.

All to run for at our ‘home’ race on 8th February at Coombe Abbey. We need as many women as possible to run at Coombe. Don’t be nervous, sign up and give it a go – if we’re to overhaul Sphinx we need you all – Sally Eason

Enigma Winter XWing 2025 Marathon – 4 January M

  Amy Burdis 04:40:07

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

Having not run at all since Ilmington and not run any distance since the start of chemotherapy in July, I was very anxious on Saturday morning. I had agreed to run this marathon at Caldecote Lake, Milton Keynes, with Amy (Burdis) as it was a celebration of her 42.2 birthday and therefore 42.1 k = marathon etc…

I wasn’t sure I could run more than 2 laps of the 7 lap course or even finish within the cut-off time. To top it all it was -2 degrees and we were layered up to the eyeballs. As we set off, Amy soon disappeared and despite her lack of training seemed to find her stride. On the other hand, I struggled. I managed 4 slow running laps without walking and checked in with the organisers if I would have time to finish if I walked. Reassured that this was so, I grabbed my poles and continued the last three laps running 100 steps and walking 50 steps. I made it!

Totally surprised and delighted we drove off in search of hot chocolate at the nearest services – Claudie

Country to Capital – 4 January OTH

  Dave Fawkner 10:48:37

The first race of the year was a tough slog, 44.49 miles from Wendover to London. Tendinitis behind the left knee and the cold weather made things more challenging, but I just wanted to get the task done.

A stunning first 20 miles of countryside, before the Grand Union Canal and some less attractive scenery. But a brilliant race with great support at the CP’s.
