The Immortal Sinner 14 Miles, Forest of Dean – 30 December OTH

25 Tim Hughes 03:03:33
27 Caroline Hughes 03:10:41

Last year Tim marshalled this race due to injury, and I dropped out halfway with a knee problem. So we both had unfinished business with this race on our return in 2024. Thankfully the conditions were better than last year.
Tim had 3 men in his age category and I had 1 woman in mine. So we both placed.

A tough trail race with a beautiful course, a small, fast field, challenging organisation, and an average of 1 hill per mile – Caroline

Our annual trip to Gaddesby for the Gallop means Christmas has officially started. Nine runners for us this year with three loud supporters meant we were well-represented and heard. The tactic as usual was to sprint from the start to clear the first two stiles before the queues built. This seemed to work for most, but for me it did not work although I got through before the queues were too bad.

Next up was the Dew Pond, full to the brim this year and with a ripe silage smell to it meant we were in and out as quickly as possible. A few fields of shoe-sucking ploughed mud followed before the drop into the drainage tunnel. This was the fullest I had ever seen it, and it seemed longer and darker than it has been in the past. Once negotiated it ws onto the worst of the ploughed fields. This time they were energy sapping as you just sank into them. But the Gallop then has a lovely river stretch to clear the shoes. It was cold and again deeper than we can recall it in the past, as confirmed by Craig and by Stu who tried to use supports to get him though which left him face first in the river. Then the last couple of sticky fields and the finish.

A complete change of clothes for us before the mulled ciders in the local pub. A great run again, well-organised, well-signposted and with loads of marshalls. Definitely worth putting in the calender again for next year Spencer

Race 3 of the winter series and it’s the route that takes in Pig Lane. It’s also the same cursing that happens as you turn to face the climb, it is a pig of a climb. With the weather being good ror running and the field being sold out we had plenty of sunbursts out representing the club. Obviously the added incentive of sausages for dinner helped. /p>

Malc led us from the start and was not catachable (despite having Saturday’s cross-country in his legs). For me, Pig Lane was a walk, knowing that I could push from the top to work my way back through the field. Watching sunbursts disappear I held my nerve. Then when the climb stopped and the breathing was under control I started the chase. One by one the Northbrookers ahead of me came into view as I chased them down, Simon having just too much of a lead. At the end I was pleased that the breathing for once held up to the task.

A great run by all on a not so easy course. The Red Lion afterwards was warming and welcoming, and with the back room booked to us we helped their income for a few hours. We will be back in January for the village-first climb – Spencer

A new venue, Solihull Riding Club, lay in wait for the Warwickshire Cross-Country Championships and we had good numbers for the event. The weather was cold and the venue was good. A slippery multi-lap course with a great drop and climb twice per lap kept the fun going and the smiles plentiful.

Our women were first up and they were feeling confident. That confident they gave their competition a 5 minute head start. This did not stop our cross-country women who soon caught up and started their progression through the field. A great run by all of them with Natalia, Debbie and Michelle leading them home, well done.

Next up were the men, and with the remnants of the flu affecting a few of us we were out there to smile and finish. 3 laps, and the fast boys were out at the front of the field, Tom and Rob leading our men back as the temperatures were dropping. Well done all.

The spikes are put away now for the Christmas period, but up next is the 3rd race of the League season – Spencer
