Northbrook Men’s A Team – 3rd – 184 points
Northbrook Men’s B Team – 4th – 612 points
2nd race in the League for the season and we were at Cofton Park. With a few changes to personnel we stepped up strongly to retain our position in the League.
The going was soft and the hills were steep, mainly well drained but with some very slippery downhill sections this felt like a proper cross-country.
Adrian in his 2st League race led us home followed closely by Matt as the rest of the A team chased them in. Noted that Tom C kept us above Kenilworth on the day with a flying shoulder barge on the finishing line.
Every place counts and all 22 men out there gave their all to the cause.
Well done men, a rare League month of 2 races. We are back in January at a new location for us near Telford, and it will be an all feet on the ground requirement as we continue our push in 3rd place – Spencer

We had 17 Northbrook women wearing the sunbursts and tackling an energy sapping, muddy Aldridge course. The weather was mild but conditions underfoot were not. It was a slog out there but everyone was flat out to the end. Some fantastic sprint finishes on the, uphill, home straight ensuring we snatched as many points as possible.
The team was led home by Kathryn Adams with Natalia Greenhill, Debbie Campbell and Michelle Edwards our four team scorers. It was brilliant to have cross-country league debuts by Mollie Williams, Lisa Bothwell and Caroline Young, all great additions to our fantastic team.
Next race is Worcester on 11th January 2025, we need as many Northbrook women there as possible – Sally Eason

My second year of being out here, and having done the 10k last year I was determined to do the half even though everyone told me how soul destroying it was. They were right!
For the first 10k both distances ran together until we had to split and then it became mind over matter as the route contained a lot switchbacks and was quite boring. However, seeing friends and other local runners made it all a little more bearable and I was determined to try and get in in under 2 hours (which I did!).
For those that don’t know the race it’s all on tarmac, not too hilly and with plenty of support, but it does have tight cut-offs and the field of a good few thousand runners are mostly Brits (over 50% of the field were from the UK).
I’d definitely recommend it as one to do but maybe stay away from Neptunes or the Jolly Roger until after you have raced – Sarah

A fantastic performance by Northbrook women at the Derby 10 miler, winning the women’s team competition and beating 2nd placed Derby Athletic Club by over two minutes as well as 31 other women’s teams.
Also having a good day at the races were Northbrook men’s team which finished in 4th place out of 31 teams.

The 5 & 7 Mile Championships traditionally is not very well attended. With very poor calenderisation by the organisers the attendance was even lower this year. We fielded 2 incomplete teams due to lack of interest. Noticeably we were the only Coventry/Warwickshire club present.
We parked up at location at what felt like the top of the hill, and with the van parked almost at the start line we opted for using it as our bag drop.
The weather for the women’s race was cold but dry. The course was due to be tough, how tough we soon found out. The women with 4 stream crossings and 2 swamp traverses reported back to the men that the distances were thankfully short, but it was either a steep climb or a steep drop. It seems like Halesowen had nothing in between to offer.
For the men, it was 3 laps, and 6 stream crossings and 3 swamp traverses. This was a tough course and with incomplete teams we were struggling to progress.
The climbs cost Jake a finish as his 1st cross-country race ruined his back with the climbs; he sensibly dropped out before too much damage was done.
This was a tough race, the toughest cross-country to date in the season. A reminder that cross country requires a level of fitness above road running (and maybe a level of stubborness to finish no matter what).
Well done all – Spencer

A brilliant performance by our Northbrook women at the first league cross-country of the season, with a fifth place overall and a seventh place in the Masters.
We had 18 runners tackling two small and two large loops of Pelsall Common. It was a flat(ish) course for cross-country but there was a treacherous muddy run in to the finish.
Amanda Deavy led the team home with a superb fourth place (the race face was on) and she was first in the Masters race. Amanda was followed in by Kathryn Adams, Jess Hone and Clare King.
There were a few cross-country first timers who lived to tell the tale and are returning for the next event which is at Aldridge on 30th November, all women are welcome – Sally Eason

33 men and a whole support crew descended on Walsall for Birminham Cross-Country League Race 1. The call had gone out and we responded in strength and depth.
The course, though not overly muddy was spongy and flat. The straights were not too long meaning concentration needed to be high which kept you involved with those racing around you.
The course this year was 1 small lap and 4 large laps, meaning the distance came in long. The weather was cold but you soon warmed up while running and our roaming supporters meant we never had a chance to take the foot of the pedal.
It was go, go, go from the outset and we kept going. The squad of 32 on the day was key to ensuring that our club got off to the best start we could do for the season. Our top 6 out-performed other local clubs and were chased by the next 6, who in turn were also chased in. And so on and so on. The camaraderie was amazing and the encouragement between us all on course worked well.
We finished 3rd by 7 points. It was a great start, but with another 3 races to go it’s a long way to go and there’s a hill to climb. And that hill comes round fast at Cofton Park next.
Rest up, clean those spikes and prepare to go again men – Spencer

MARK BAKER
This was my first longer race in about 6 months. It was a low key event on a Friday morning with loops around Caldecotte lake in Milton Keynes. The route was on narrow twisty paths, with surfaces including tarmac, gravel and grass.
A great event to warmup for the cross-country league and the Benidorm half-marathon.
