Carsington Water 10k – 24 February 10K

| Chris Archer | 1:05:10 |
Our first time at Carsington Water, a reservoir in a beautiful part of Derbyshire. Four different races available on the day, Claudie took the Marathon and I did the 10km.
Crisp weather, the early morning fog soon dissipated for some lovely racing. The courses were a bit undulating and busy with other park users at times but overall a great day out. I expect we will return.
Carsington Water Trail Marathon – 24 February M

Finally got to run after breaking down on Friday on the way to a Big Bear event. Carsington Water is beautiful. It was a frosty blue sky morning. The course was 3.5 laps around the reservoir.
The paths were mostly rocky, a bit muddy but OK. The terrain was like a rollercoaster! Hilly/undulating all the way round, just one flat part along the dam where everybody and their dog was walking their dog. It was tough going after very little running recently and no training. My stomach was not happy either. Very pleased to finish though.
I would recommend it as there are 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon races. Very friendly organisation and marshals.

The tiny picturesque village of Ilmington was set to welcome us for the last race of the series, and it was due to be a wet one. The rain on the run up had turned roads into rivers and puddles across the top of the famous Larkstoke hill.
With 9 Northbrookers and 2 marshalls we were all there for the sausages and the fabled hoodie.
Although the rain on the day did not materialise it was still wading territory in some places, and the finish onto the field was more like cross-country than a field as we prepared ourselves for one last slog up Larkstoke. Paul led us home having had a fantastic run, a blister limited my progress and Cath collected the winner in her age category for the series, well done Cath.
As always the pub afterwards was very receptive and a welcome sight for us all as we all sported our new well-earned red winter series hoodies.
With entries for the next series opening most will be back next year for more hill climbing, for more sausages and for more hoodies – Spencer

Beautiful run, beautiful weather, friendly local clubs. Finished 15th female and 3rd in age group on a tough hilly course.
Southampton Festival of Running 5k – 18 February 5K

As I was spending the weekend with friends in Southampton, I decided to enter the local 5k race (there was a 10k and half marathon as well, but having had a slight injury problem recently, I thought that would have been over ambitious). Not very fast but at least my injury stood up to it quite well.

My daughter was doing her first "proper" 5k, so I decided to sign up for the 10k, two laps of Sutton Park along the same route as the Sutton Relays. I spotted 3 Northbrookers doing the 4 lap Half-Marathon too. It was a day when everything went well, the rain had stopped and the Burton Dasset hills had set me up nicely for the gentler Sutton Park hills.
I managed to knock 2m29s from my previous 10k PB, and I finally got a 1st place in my age category.

Cometh the last race and cometh the men. Burton Dassett did not put us off as we made our way there for the last race, although traffic conditions leaving Coventry meant that 6 of ours were stuck at a standstill and missed the race.
A proper undulating cross country-race in a stunning venue with great organisation and the most amazing of marshalls meant that, though it may have been tough, we all gave it everything we could. Great team spirit, though to a man they all looked shocked when they finished.
As a team we did the best we could over the season, noticeable absences meant the chance for all to participate in team scoring and noticeable improvement by most over the season. Eight ever-presents for the League shows a great commitment by Alan, Charlie, David T, Kevin S, Mark, Matthew, Spencer and Terry, all backed up by our ever present volunteer Bob and ever-present cheer leader Jeannie.
One cross-country race left for the season, then we can look towards the smooth black stuff before the League raises its head next season. Thanks guys – Spencer

Location: Top Barn, University of Worcester, Lakeside Campus.
The final league race saw the women head to a new venue in Worcestershire, Top Barn. Despite being surrounded by hills, the course was a largely flat, two and half loops round the scenic university sports fields, which included a lake. Race day was like a Spring day with temperatures to match, but after a week of rain it was very muddy underfoot with some narrow boggy bits to negotiate. The finishing straight was particularly treacherous.
Another great turn out with twelve runners making the journey. Amanda Deavey led the team home, finishing 13th overall and fourth Master, followed up by Kathryn Adams and Debbie Campbell. We had one DNF, Daisy sensibly pulling out after one lap due to injury.
A great turn out from Northbrook women over the course of the cross-country league with seven ever-presents, so a big shout out to Kathryn Adams, Cath Fenn, Michelle Edwards, Julie Cozens, Joanne Evans, Ruth Hallett and Daisy Evans, fabulous commitment. Also to the other ever present Rob Cox, driver, supporter, flapjack maker & occasional official when required.

Usually a good group of us go in for this 8-mile trail race, but only 2 this time. Others, possibly put off by past horror stories, missed an absolute treat. Great weather, the course was well marked (thankfully), and generally a great atmosphere all round.
I was part of the leading pack going up the hill at the start. Several runners dropped back as the climb dragged on, and by the top of Mayhill it appeared this would be a two horse race. My opponent, better on the uphills, had built a bit of a gap, but I quickly closed this going down the other side, taking the lead by the half way aid station. We ran pretty much together until the other big climb around 5 miles in. I’ve always struggled at this hill, and today was no different. The other runner had to walk some as well, though less (although Spencer managed to run it all, go Spence!). By the top I had lost sight of him, but kept the pace up winding through the village.
About a mile to go and the course goes around a field, and I could see my target about 30 seconds in front. The last half mile is steep downhill and, in the past this had been on a very technical mountain bike path where I was convinced I could catch up. Alas, that path was not taken this year, instead going straight down the initial climb. I did reel him in significantly, but ran out of race in the end, finishing agonisingly 5 seconds behind.
Bacon rolls/hot dogs/cake in the cafe after was a delicious end to an excellent day – Matthew
