Saturday saw the arrival of the Midlands Cross-Country Championships at Newbold Comyn. Despite it not being the traditional course which would include "the beacon" and "the ditch", the organisers had found another slightly smaller ditch for us to play with and a very twisty and steep climb up the hills.

21 Northbrook sunbursts were out on display over the women’s and the men’s races with us supporting each other’s races. We also had 2 extra supporters who kept ensuring we were trying all the way round.

2 laps for the women and 3 laps for the men meant the race distances stayed as advertised at 8K and 12K. These extra distance championship races are fast and challenging. With GB athletes present in the women’s race, Amanda did her best to stay with them while leading the team home.

In the men’s race Terry, Tommy and Kevin all sparred with each other before Terry led us home. There was some very tight grouping behind as we worked together to drag and pull each other around.

Two cross-country races left for the year now. The last of the League races is up next and then the big one, the Nationals at Telford – Spencer

An absolutely brutal 50 mile race on the Cornish coast path from Porthtowan. Excellent weather though, so an enjoyable day, even if I couldn’t quite keep the pace that I wanted.

Village first this time for race 4 in the Winter Series at Ilmington.
With 11 Northbrookers running, 1 run supporting and 3 marshalls provided, the sunburst was present and visible.

The wind from storm Isha did not materialise before we had finished and with temperatures rising it was pleasant conditions to run in.
Our first marshall was on the steepest part of the climb which added more pain and suffering to the steep climb out of the village, but she was a welcome sight encouraging us to keep on running.

Our second marshall was at the bottom of Lark Stoke, a welcome sight for those who risked the mud-covered plummett. Our last marshall was at the top of the final km and though a welcome sight, there was an air of smugness as she witnessed us all drag ourselves up the last climb. All was forgotten as we descended on the pub for refreshments and a thorough warming by the side of the open hearth.

Race 5 next. Hill first and this time we finish in the fabled hoodies. Bring it on – Spencer

25 men took the challenge for the 3rd race and the trip north. It was a slightly cold day but dry and we ventured to a venue where we had not raced before.
4 large laps and 1 short lap awaited us meaning we would have plenty of chances to be supported and to encourage our fellow runners.

The women were first out and reported back that despite being flat, it was a little twisty, with some boggy points but generally a good course.

Step up the 25 sunbursts, for some it was their first race of the season, for some their ever present status in the league was being maintained. For some it was a case of getting round. The field was tough and the women did a good job of cutting the course up nicely for us. The encouragement from our supporters drove us on and kept us moving. The encouragement to our fellow sunbursts drove them on.

The course was really good, with some great runable sections, but it did also have a boggy patch that pulled at the spikes on your feet and didn’t want to et you go. But good fun.

Our top 6 ran into an amazing 10th place on the day, the B team securing 4th place on the day. Well done to all.

Last venue and League race is the daunting Burton Dassett hills. We will all need to be out for that one, supporters as well to try to lift the men up the impending hills – Spencer

Race 3 of this season’s competition took us to a new cross-country venue. Pelsall Common was a largely flat but deceptively boggy course, with a very gloopy sting in the tail along the home straight, making the final dash for the line hard work for all the runners. Both men and women were running at the event so there was great club support.
We had 15 Northbrook women out wearing the sunburst.

The course comprised two (very) small laps and two large laps around the Common, it was a short course with everyone clocking it at under three miles. Kathryn Adams led the team home, followed by Clare King, Cath Fenn and Natalia Greenhill. Great effort by all the runners and nice to have the men cheering everyone round the course.

The route which included Robin Hood’s Bay and the Cleveland Way was extended to 35 miles with diversions due to flooding. A lovely day but plenty of mud.

Winter Enigma 1 Marathon, Milton Keynes – 6 January M

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

No training or long-distance runs since early November and a badly bruised coccyx meant that I was ill-prepared for a 17.5 laps marathon. Did I mention I don’t like laps? It had one nasty steep hill but otherwise only slight undulations. The lake is lovely and the sun came out to play. Despite the drugs, the pain made itself felt! I finished in a respectable time all things considered but really struggled on the last 4 laps.
