Les Croupiers RC Old Father Time 5 Miles – 31 December 5M

59 Terry Moynihan 0:33:10
95 Tom Miller 0:36:42

It was a rush of blood in Christmas week fuelled by Lee bearing down on me in the 2023 race champs that led me to enter this New Year’s Eve 5-mile event in Cardiff, billed as flat and fast. Tom was interested too, so we booked into the 33rd running of the ‘Old Father Time’ event hosted by Les Croupiers Running Club and unusual in that it’s restricted to those aged 35+.

Travelling down, I wondered how sensible the decision to enter was as the rain was horizontal with gale force winds and all the rivers we crossed in flood. Thankfully the rain eased just before the race start, and we joined 250 others, primarily from running clubs across Wales, for the two-lap course around Pontcanna Park and Sophia Gardens alongside the swollen river Taff. The event lived up to its billing and was pancake flat bar a couple of minor bumps.

We were both happy with our respective performances, and especially so as the heavens opened again very shortly after finishing the race with such intensity that I imagine any remaining runners were washed away – by the time we reached the car, we looked as though we’d just completed a swimming event.

I recommend this race, or a walk alongside the river, although I more strongly advocate checking the medium-term weather forecast prior to entry – Terry

Cue year end, cue the chance to sin and to immortalise. Cue the 04:30 alarm calls. With the start at 9am there was a salvo of early alarm clocks set across the Northbrook homes to get us down there in time.

The ground was already sodden from the rain received in advance and we were under no illusions, this was going to be muddy and cold. The good news is that with the amount of rainfall the tunnell crossings would have been impassable so at least the chance of hyperthermia held off.

The conditions were even worse, with mud oozing down the hills like a lava flow disguising the buried rocks and tree roots, this was going to be awesome. Then the heavens opened, then the thunderstorm (always good to hear thunder when in a forest).

Despite this no real incidents occurred and everyone seemed to enjoy the conditions. The van heater on the way back worked overtime and the euphoria was topped up with beer.

You either love or hate the sins. Most of us love them – Spencer

Race 3, and this year they went pre-Christmas and introduced a new/old course to keep the series entertaining. Who would know that such a small, sleepy village could have a 3rd monster hill out of it? With the course not revealed until the day the excitement/nerves/speculation were at top level.

Tommy over for his first of the series was trying to convince us he was not going to go well. Race mentality took over as he soon disappeared up the hill. I opted for a tactical pace up the hill as Paul passed me. It took till 7km for me to get back on terms with him, but with our legs gone from the previous day’s exertions there would be no catching of Tommy.

The course this time was good, still a bit hilly but nice to run on some different roads. Our two marshalls out on course ensured when we passed them that we know if we weren’t trying.

The Red Lion afterwards was always just as welcoming with its roaring open fire and liquid refreshments to rehydrate us. Three down, two to go, and village first next time – Spencer

The traditional start of Christmas run the Gaddesby Gallop event this year clashed with the Warwickshires, but with the Warwickshires being late a few of us had already signed up to this very popular gallop.

It’s a 5.25 mile, proper cross-country race, featuring stiles, very wet ploughed fields, hills, a dewpond crossing, a drainage tunnel and a river stretch. It’s a proper run and the conditions really do make a difference to every year.

SPENCER DAVIES

This year the stiles were the holdup with up to 10-15 minutes wait at each of the first 2 stiles. Then came the ploughed field in the first mile that ensured you took more mud out of the field than was left in it, then the dip through the very silty dewpond (with chest height water).

One of the toughest runs around that makes you smile and curse as well at every step and finish beaming. The pub afterwards of course makes the experience more memorable. We will be back next year.

Christmas can start now that the Gallop is done – Spencer

It was probably a mistake for me to be running this event with a very heavy cold. It was a hilly course of 4 laps for the men, and I found it hard to breathe from the start. I soon resigned myself to being at the back of the field, but I finished, then needed by a 10 hour recovery sleep when I got home.

It was still great to represent the club, and the supporters were fantastic.
The championships combined runners from Warwickshire and Worcestershire. The weather was mild and sunny for the event.

When I arrived, the women had already started, and our 2 runners ran well. Then the senior and masters men started together. Unfortunately, Lee McKervery had to pull out very early on with an injury, but we still had enough people to complete a senior team and a masters team.

Thanks to Rob Richardson for all the support, registration, setting up the tent and looking after some children – Mark

Ten of us made our way to Walsall for the festive Sneyd Christmas Pudding Runs. Six ran the 5miles (1 lap) and four went round again for the 10 mile option. This year we were spared the 3 inches of snow that greeted us in 2022 but we were treated to Sunday morning’s rain band which started half way through lap 1.

Some excellent runs as you can see in the results table on this mixed course of flat, slow build hill through Springhill and then downhill in the last mile to the finish. Pete Stafford’s superb 1hr:04m for the 10 mile put him into outright lead in MV35 and also 3rd overall in the Men’s Champs.  I myself was chuffed to see a 3rd category placing for my 5 miles.

Well done everyone and we know it’s "not all over yet" as 2023 has more races to offer yet – Kevin

Northbrook Men’s Senior B Team, 814 points – 5th

Northbrook Men’s Masters A Team, 170 points – 9th
Northbrook Men’s Masters B Team, 344 points – 4th

As temperatures dropped it was a long road trip down to Gloucester for Race 2 where the club fielded 18 warriors over 4 laps. With 2 supporters (the loudest) and 1 marshall we showed off the Northbrook men off to their very best.

Our "A" team grouped well to give us a score of 351 points, putting us in 7th place on the day.

The "B" team also worked off each other to give us 814 points and 5th place on the day.

We were backed up by another 6 runners ensuring no-one took their foot of the pedal. Northbrooks stallions storming round the fields of Plock Court were led home by Matthew Hathrell.

Next up is Race 3 at Walsall Arboretum in January. Men, clean those spikes and rest your weary legs. We will go again. Great running by all – Spencer

The Welcombe Hills in Stratford are never very welcoming when it comes to cross-country season. This year was no different with sub zero temperatures and an icy fog trying to disguise the hills. 19 Northbrook women turned out to run and with a field of 201, we represented just under 10% of the runners – sunbursts were everywhere.
The hills were steep and hard, the downs were treacherous and the bits the Marshalls called ‘flat’ were undulating, ridged and boggy. It was a technical course requiring concentration throughout to stay upright and maintain momentum.

Amanda Deavy led the team home, 13th finisher overall and 3rd Masters finisher, backed up by Kathryn Adams and Clare King. Caroline Hughes ran on her birthday, so that was an extra reason for cake.

Northbrook were 7th team overall, out of 25, and 7th Masters team. Fabulous team effort.

Big thanks to our supporters on the day who popped up around the course shouting words of encouragement and taking pictures, Rob Cox, Tim Hughes, Mark Parker and Jonathan Vardy. Rob also provided the flapjacks – Sally Eason

Oulton Park Half-Marathon – 26 November HM

Paul Robbins 1:41:19

Entering this race was an impulse decision in order to try to improve on my disastrous Cov half time. I didn’t train for it (other than the usual ticking over runs) and I ran on empty (no breccie or energy bars etc), so the time was as good as I could expect. Surprisingly, I came third in my age group. I’ll have to enter half-marathons with fewer than 200 competitors more often.

Running on a car race track was an exciting novelty, especially while going around the steeply raked apex. I kept the "brum brum" noises to myself – I think. Oh, and I wimped out and wore a long sleeved top under my race vest. The shame.

A fantastic race with a party atmosphere. It was very busy at the start and I struggled to find my pace, weaving and dodging other runners. All thoughts of getting a good time went out of my mind and I just ran to enjoy it and to see how I felt.

It was lovely running along the beach and through the old town, and the crowd support was amazing. The second half was a bit of a drag up and down long stretches of road. The only bonus was seeing fellow Northbrookers running in the opposite direction. It was a long 13.1 miles so it was a great along the final stretch, getting cheered from all the 10k finishers and Northbrookers.

The finish line was at the top of a short steep hill which felt like running up the travalitor on Gladitors, I didn’t seem to be going anywhere. There was a super finishers’ bag and Coke at the end. If we come again I would do the 10k next time. I was very pleased when Strava flashed up a half-marathon PB – Joanne

God’s Own Back Yard Ultra, Leeds – 18 November OTH

Matt Hathrell 12 Laps – 12 hours – 50 miles

My first taste of a backyard ultra, a last man standing event with a 4.167 mile lap every hour, so I had no real idea what to expect. The 8 daytime loops were a lot of fun – out along the canal then winding through the woods on the way back. I was running strongly, getting quicker every lap and really enjoying myself. A bit better pacing would probably have been wise, as, when the night loops started, my pace dropped quite substantially. The night loop was just out and backs along the tarmac canal, and became a complete grind. No longer enjoying myself, I just pushed to the 50 mile mark – my minimum target going in – and called it a night. A few more laps would have been possible, and I’d like to give the format another go if I can find a course that will be good all day round.

Alton Towers Half-Marathon – 12 November HM

Alan Smith 1:44:24

I entered this race using one of my free run vouchers I got from my last Run Through volunteering stint, although it ended up costing me in the end, as all my kids decided they wanted to come and support me ( i.e. go on the rides).

Alton Towers is closed to the public over this weekend, so the queues for the rides aren’t too bad. The weather was awful – about 3 degrees, and freezing cold rain it never stopped raining all day). A massive queue for the baggage drop and a very narrow start approach meant I had to start near the back, so the 1st mile and a bit was spent running around people whilst dodging puddles. It’s a 2-lap course with the first part of each lap inside Alton Towers resort and the rest around the various car parks.

Upon re-entering the park at the end of the 1st lap, I ran into the tail end of the 5k race which was taking part as well, so lots of congestion again. If I do this again, I’ll make sure I’m nearer the front.

All in all, despite the rain, a nice day out.

The sun shone on Aldridge Airport for the first Midlands Women’s Cross-Country League race of the 23/24 season. 19 women turned out to run in the Northbrook sunbursts and do battle with an energy sapping course of gloopy fields and muddy paths winding up through the woods. The run was made easier with great support from the Northbrook men. Our team finished in 10th place.

Kathryn Adams and Jess Hone led the team home but were ably supported by a great team who were spurring each other on. There were several league cross-country debuts for Natalia Greenhill, Emma Jayne Vardy, Daisy Evans, Ruth Hallett and Judy Hayley and they’ve all signed for the next one – Sally Eason

11 Northbrook teams, 44 runners, laced up spikes and trail shoes for the Warwick University Relays on 4th November. A week of rain had left the 3.3 Km route very muddy, the famous water feature deep and a few extra puddles had emerged to make it more entertaining. Bob Adams cheered everyone through the puddle and runners and supporters were dotted around to offer support and encouragement when the going got tough.

Northbrook Orinoco (Tom Hughes, Steve Turvey, Tom Cox, Matt Hattrell) were the first Northbrook team home, the sixth men’s team overall, out of 17. Northbrook Bulgaria (Amanda Deavey, Christie Hall, Gemma Nash, Jess Hone) were the third women’s team overall.

It was good to have a lot of new members having their first taste of cross country, and still smiling afterwards – Sally

November Nightmare Coalport Railway Marathon – 2 November M

My second time here in three days, and the second time along the railway line. Storm Ciaran had caught up with Shropshire though and the conditions were very wet and windy. Hanging on in there for the last marathon of the year.

Very pleased with my results in the end though. Home for a rest and a weekend in London with NO running.

November Nightmare Lightmoor Bank Marathon – 1 November M

Day two didn’t sound like fun. 32, yes 32 laps running around in a circle with two hills each time. I hate laps! I’m sure Mark Baker would have thought it too few to bother. Very rocky path and lots and lots of puddles. The highlight was seeing the same deer on the path 3 times. Not sure I’ll enter this one ever again.

Big Bear Rabbit Challenge – 1 November OTH

  Matthew Hathrell 4:00:48 7 laps – 27.3 miles
  Jane Ward 4:26:06 4 laps – 15.6 miles

Run as many 3.9 mile laps around Daventry Country Park as you want to in a maximum of 6 hours.
