Oulton Park Half-MarathonOulton Park Half-Marathon – 26 November HM

Paul Robbins 1:41:19

Entering this race was an impulse decision in order to try to improve on my disastrous Cov half time. I didn’t train for it (other than the usual ticking over runs) and I ran on empty (no breccie or energy bars etc), so the time was as good as I could expect. Surprisingly, I came third in my age group. I’ll have to enter half-marathons with fewer than 200 competitors more often.

Running on a car race track was an exciting novelty, especially while going around the steeply raked apex. I kept the "brum brum" noises to myself – I think. Oh, and I wimped out and wore a long sleeved top under my race vest. The shame.

A fantastic race with a party atmosphere. It was very busy at the start and I struggled to find my pace, weaving and dodging other runners. All thoughts of getting a good time went out of my mind and I just ran to enjoy it and to see how I felt.

It was lovely running along the beach and through the old town, and the crowd support was amazing. The second half was a bit of a drag up and down long stretches of road. The only bonus was seeing fellow Northbrookers running in the opposite direction. It was a long 13.1 miles so it was a great along the final stretch, getting cheered from all the 10k finishers and Northbrookers.

The finish line was at the top of a short steep hill which felt like running up the travalitor on Gladitors, I didn’t seem to be going anywhere. There was a super finishers’ bag and Coke at the end. If we come again I would do the 10k next time. I was very pleased when Strava flashed up a half-marathon PB – Joanne

A challenging run on a cold November morning, with a mixture of trail surfaces, some hard stuff, plus a water crossing that had to be done twice by those doing the 8 mile race.

For the first time, there was a 5 mile race too, with Kevin Spare grabbing 3rd place in that – Steve

The second race of the Tempo Winter Series took us round the 6.4 mile course in a clockwise direction, which means village first. The course is slightly longer this way round and has a hair raising descent down Larkstoke before a final last 3 hills to the finish.

Great performances from everyone and great pub beer and chips as a reward. The next race is in December – Claudie

God’s Own Back Yard Ultra, Leeds – 18 November OTH

Matt Hathrell 12 Laps – 12 hours – 50 miles

My first taste of a backyard ultra, a last man standing event with a 4.167 mile lap every hour, so I had no real idea what to expect. The 8 daytime loops were a lot of fun – out along the canal then winding through the woods on the way back. I was running strongly, getting quicker every lap and really enjoying myself. A bit better pacing would probably have been wise, as, when the night loops started, my pace dropped quite substantially. The night loop was just out and backs along the tarmac canal, and became a complete grind. No longer enjoying myself, I just pushed to the 50 mile mark – my minimum target going in – and called it a night. A few more laps would have been possible, and I’d like to give the format another go if I can find a course that will be good all day round.

Alton Towers Half-Marathon – 12 November HM

Alan Smith 1:44:24

I entered this race using one of my free run vouchers I got from my last Run Through volunteering stint, although it ended up costing me in the end, as all my kids decided they wanted to come and support me ( i.e. go on the rides).

Alton Towers is closed to the public over this weekend, so the queues for the rides aren’t too bad. The weather was awful – about 3 degrees, and freezing cold rain it never stopped raining all day). A massive queue for the baggage drop and a very narrow start approach meant I had to start near the back, so the 1st mile and a bit was spent running around people whilst dodging puddles. It’s a 2-lap course with the first part of each lap inside Alton Towers resort and the rest around the various car parks.

Upon re-entering the park at the end of the 1st lap, I ran into the tail end of the 5k race which was taking part as well, so lots of congestion again. If I do this again, I’ll make sure I’m nearer the front.

All in all, despite the rain, a nice day out.

The sun shone on Aldridge Airport for the first Midlands Women’s Cross-Country League race of the 23/24 season. 19 women turned out to run in the Northbrook sunbursts and do battle with an energy sapping course of gloopy fields and muddy paths winding up through the woods. The run was made easier with great support from the Northbrook men. Our team finished in 10th place.

Kathryn Adams and Jess Hone led the team home but were ably supported by a great team who were spurring each other on. There were several league cross-country debuts for Natalia Greenhill, Emma Jayne Vardy, Daisy Evans, Ruth Hallett and Judy Hayley and they’ve all signed for the next one – Sally Eason

11 Northbrook teams, 44 runners, laced up spikes and trail shoes for the Warwick University Relays on 4th November. A week of rain had left the 3.3 Km route very muddy, the famous water feature deep and a few extra puddles had emerged to make it more entertaining. Bob Adams cheered everyone through the puddle and runners and supporters were dotted around to offer support and encouragement when the going got tough.

Northbrook Orinoco (Tom Hughes, Steve Turvey, Tom Cox, Matt Hattrell) were the first Northbrook team home, the sixth men’s team overall, out of 17. Northbrook Bulgaria (Amanda Deavey, Christie Hall, Gemma Nash, Jess Hone) were the third women’s team overall.

It was good to have a lot of new members having their first taste of cross country, and still smiling afterwards – Sally

My second time here in three days, and the second time along the railway line. Storm Ciaran had caught up with Shropshire though and the conditions were very wet and windy. Hanging on in there for the last marathon of the year.

Very pleased with my results in the end though. Home for a rest and a weekend in London with NO running.

November Nightmare Lightmoor Bank Marathon – 1 November M

Day two didn’t sound like fun. 32, yes 32 laps running around in a circle with two hills each time. I hate laps! I’m sure Mark Baker would have thought it too few to bother. Very rocky path and lots and lots of puddles. The highlight was seeing the same deer on the path 3 times. Not sure I’ll enter this one ever again.
