Thursday night saw wet weather, but our trains were scheduled and almost all turned up to complete 7 trains. We had to bring train Victor out of the shed to make the 7th train.
With a few last minutes changes there was a significant handicap in place to allow Victor to start its journey.

Team Percy may have started last but they delivered on time to complete in 1st place almost a lap ahead of half the other trains.
Taking 2nd place and starting joint last was Team James, whilst the last podium place on the wet night went to team Thomas who just held of Gordon.

Another great night even in the pouring rain with failing light.
All trains complete for the year and tidied away back in their sheds ready for a 2024 outing

Six trains were up first on the bank holiday. With the weather being dry and the excitement high we had a full compliment.
Handicapping meant team Edward took the lead on lap 1 and held onto it through to the end, Thomas taking 2nd place as they climbed through the sidings with team Percy taking the last podium spot.

Winchcombe 10k Hill Climb – 27 August10k

21 Spencer Davies 00:52:55

This is another event I’ve always wanted to have a crack at, and this year the dates worked in my favour. I know the Sudeley Castle area well from another race so I knew the drag up to Belas Knapp was not going to be easy.

With the first 3k being slightly undulating I knew that I had to push to give myself a chance up the hill. The plan was to run for as far as I could before reverting to a walk in places whilst resuming the run on the few flat bits there are. As the summit approached I knew I could push on from there and fly down the hill. As I overtook those that had passed me walking up I heard the odd moan but kept going. The downhill was great; the uphills as tough as you could imagine them to be, but completed and the sausages at the end were well deserved.

If the dates continue to work then I will return to attempt the drag up again.

Pain in the knee at mile 21 so I walked the last lap.

Hopefully all will be better ready for the event.

CAROLINE HUGHES

Three Northbrookers ran this Big Bear challenge at Salcey Forest. It was a 6-hour lapped event (as many laps as you can do in 6 hours, provided you started your final lap before the 6 hours were up) following a 3.5 lap course on forest trails (a slightly extended version of the parkrun route).

The weather was hot and humid but the route was nicely shaded and like all Big Bear events, organised, welcoming and friendly with a well-stocked aid station. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone new to distance trail running.

En route, we saw the Running Channel testing the new Nike trail shoe, which should be on their YouTube channel shortly – Caroline

Hooky 6 – 6 AugustOTH

SPENCER DAVIES

The Hooky 6 is a race that’s been on the list to do for a while now, but the dates have never quite worked till this year. As the only sunburst present, I thought I should try my best, nowhere to hide. The nerves were high as the field looked to be quite speedy. I knew I had my work cut out.

This was a 2 lap event round the village, and not knowing the course I opted for sensibility and kept pace and position for lap 1. There was a 1 mile climb per lap but nothing too dangerous so on lap 2 I knew what was coming and could push harder. Surrounded by runners from Headington I decided to light up the sunburst. Keeping the youngsters off my back and battling with a fellow MV50 we kept increasing the pace till the all out sprint at the end for a photo finish.

Great event that I will almost certainly be back for.

Rocky Horror Half-Marathon – 6 AugustHM

2 Mark Baker 1:46:03

Rocky Horror Marathon Debut (fangs ain’t what they used to be)
My 99th marathon. Well it had to be something a little special. The Rocky Horror tribute marathon seemed perfect. Arriving as Count Dracula resplendent in black, fanged and caped and rising in the early hours to leave the dark pit of pestilence and decay that is Coventry ready to be fawned upon by sexy little vampirettes. I’ve never seen the film … do vampires even feature in it?

There seemed to be a fair number of scantily clad men in gold lamé shorts, bikini clad waitresses, and men with beards in drag, what exactly was I getting myself into here? Mark Baker was also present on the starting line, but dressed as per normal. Presumably already Rocky Horror enough and sadly only taking part in the half marathon.

The race itself is a bit of a stranger to the usual race etiquette; the marathon involving 43 laps of a 1 kilometre course in Shrewsbury with every competitor carrying a tally card to be clipped at the end of each lap. Not so good if a group of runners reach this point at the same time. One clipper shouted out “Come on Drac”. “Count to you, young lady – bit of respect due” I replied.

I was also disappointed in what was on offer at the feed stations, the fresh blood of young virgins not being an option. After a couple of laps it was clearly going to be a hot one, and my long sleeved top, cape and tracksters weren’t exactly helping. Also, the purple facial makeup (more Prince of Darkness than Boy George hopefully) was running into my eyes, causing them to sting. But of course I’m a real trooper, and stayed in role for the entire duration of the race, although I did ditch the fangs before I choked to death (even though I was undead already in theory).

The finishing time was another personal worst. Another nail in the coffin of my running career. But of course I will rise again to complete my 100th. You have been warned – Dave
