SPENCER DAVIES

With numbers low and the weather warming up the episode of "Overseas Hi-Way Race" was on and with a full cast apart from one. The characters headed to their respective starts with their own individual start times allocated.

The task was to catch the pigeon, the pigeon’s task was to evade capture and beat the racers down the course. Dastardly plots were in place and tactics discussed. The whacky races were go, go, go.

Waiting at the end, the glamorous chequered flag man and his trusted place-keeper were ready, and the racers were running for their place on the podium. The first 3 crossing the line looked as if they had put everything in to it, having caught and passed the pigeon, there was no stopping them.

The individual starts worked as the closest finish over the whole group played out with everyone surpassing their expected run times and taking the chequered flag at Cox’s Conclusion.

Well done all, great running and great fun had. We will be back next year – Spencer

Dorney Lake Half-Marathon – 16 JulyHM

91 Mark Baker 01:49:52

As I arrived, a triathlon was already underway in the lake.
The half marathon was on one side of the lake, consisting of 4 out and back legs.
The route was flat, but the out leg was into a very strong headwind.
I may be back for another event here soon.

Carrot Dash – 1 mileOTH

11 Matthew Hathrell 0::6:50

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend of running with a variety of races and challenges at Marston Lodge, Market Harborough. Sphinx turned out in big numbers – I reckon we can get a good number of Northbrookers there next year to challenge them.

The first event of the weekend is the Trail Mix, 5 races of 5k (ish) starting on the hour every hour and getting increasingly hillier as the day goes on. I had close podium battles in basically every race, and in the challenge as a whole, but a good run in Race 3 was enough to build a gap, and I got little trophy in the first event of the weekend.
Unfortunately, I’d probably put too much effort in and, well, things didn’t go so well after that.

The 2nd event was the Headlight Hop 10k. This was the race with the most elevation and once we hit the biggest hills I lost touch with the lead group. I ended up 7th, dropping to 5th overall.
There was plenty of entertainment put on in the evening with a couple of guest peakers and then live music, and the bar open until late.

Sunday morning, up bright and early for the last event, the trail half. The top 6 overall qualify for the final, and I had a 4 and 6 minute gap to the 2 runners behind me, so the race was just about keeping in touch with them. Around 10 miles, the gap started to build, but I forced myself to the line, keeping the 5th place overall.

After the finish I was described as looking very ‘pale’. There was an hours gap before the final – a 1 mile dash to see who won. I forced down some food and water, and generally tried to perk myself up as much as possible, but didn’t have high hopes for the race. I tried to match the pace at the start but it quickly became apparent that that wasn’t going to happen, and I ambled across the line, once again in 5th place (although the winner had qualified 6th, guess he’d done the smart thing and saved his legs).

All in all, a brilliant experience, and one that I heartily recommend. The venue is brilliant and the routes are varied. Everything you could want out of a trail weekend.

MARK BAKER

I decided to run this Tuesday evening 10km race a few days after marshalling at the Northbrook 10km race, where I watched lots of great performances.

This race used to start at the Open University, but has now moved to Willen Lake. It is part of the East Midlands Grand Prix Series and the entry fee was only £10!

There was heavy rain just before the start, but conditions were great as we lapped the lake following the redway footpaths. I was pleased to see some improvement since my last 10k race.

Holkham 10k – 8 July10k

  Caroline Hughes 01:11:08
  Chris Archer 01:21:33

For my second attempt at a triathlon I decided to give a middle-distance triathlon a shot. So last August Holkham was booked. The weekend finally came round after months of build and training.

Saturday arrived and Chris and Caroline were the first out of the blocks racing the Holkham 10k race.  In blazing hot sunshine with little shade and high humidity they started off with a decent pace, however both along with many others that day struggled with the heat but came in with respectable times for the conditions.  Then Claudie and I racked our bikes ready for the next morning. Before retiring back to our accommodation for food, rest & prep.

Next day a 6:30 swim time meant a very early start to get fuelled up and off to the stunning Holkham Hall. The swim went off in time trial format, 2×2 every 6 seconds. A very reedy and dirty lake meant I was rarely swimming in water.

A pleasant transition onto the bike started well but then I needed to stop to adjust glasses and helmet, before climbing for the first mile and a half, a great way to get the legs warmed up.  The Norfolk roads were far from flat, and bumpy in places.  Unfortunately I dropped my water bottle onto the road at 10 miles so I needed to get off and run back to retrieve it. As I got to the aid station my legs were starting to feel tired but I knew I had a further ca20 miles to go, so I grabbed a new water bottle and gels before easing off the pace for the final 10 miles.

Back into the Holkham estate to finish the bike and a lot of people were already on the running course. I was off the bike before the dismount line and my legs did not allow me to run back towards my transition spot.  So after a brisk waddle I got my running trainers back on and attempted to start climbing back up that hill. It was 3 laps starting with a 2 mile climb and it was a delight to see our Northbrook cheer group of Caroline & Chris at the start of each lap. Once we climbed the hill it was a pleasant run through the woods back to finish.

I approached the event in a great mood.  I knew my running wasn’t great due to carrying injuries so I put almost zero time expectations on me.  I just wanted to stay ahead of cut-off and complete the event.  When I did face tiredness I was still quite happy and that carried me through.  It was a shame to not see Claudie on the course but as she started 15 minutes behind me it would have been difficult to see each other.  Overall the course was fantastic,  Outlaw organisation was first class and there was a great atmosphere throughout – Tim

Babbs Mill parkrun – 1 JulyOTH

With the War Memorial park being closed for the Godiva Festival a few Northbrookers decided to try Babbs Mill parkrun. Having been told it was a quick course Debbie Campbell and I were both hunting PB’s. Cooler conditions, if a little windy, was encouraging, as was the fewer number of runners.

I got myself to the front and went off with some very fast, very young looking guys. I tried to hang on to them and then as the field spread I started to moderate my effort. As a few other runners picked me off I tried to stay with them as they passed which helped me keep pushing my effort. It’s a long finish and I was able to nick a couple of places back to finish 17th overall and third in my age. Most importantly I recorded a new 5k PB of 22.25.

Can’t finish the write up without mentioning the church cafe across the road. Fantastic friendly cafe with amazing waffles, well worth a visit – Cliff Evans
