Abbotts Trail 10k – 31 July 10K

A bonkers idea was formed to cycle the 22 miles to Hopwas for this localish trail race. Not having done it before we had no idea what to expect. Run by the charity Simons Heroes it was run very efficiently and professionally, a lot better than some of the races I have done recently.
I’d overindulged at the rugby on the Saturday night, and with the cycle over I had the intention to try to match my slowest TR24 lap from the previous weekend. Mark decided to go the opposite way and try to beat his fastest TR24 lap.
The course was 2 laps, taking in the ever so delightful "Cardiac Hill" on each lap, yes I walked this both times. Apart from the hill the scenery was beautiful; golden wheat fields billowing heat at you and cool dappled sheltered forest trail runs. The band on the course was one of the highlights as was the singer who enjoyed me joining in on his chorus, and the marshall sporting the life-vest.
The 22 mile ride back was not such a good idea – Spencer

A year in the planning and very few personnel changes required for the Northbrook and guests contingent heading to Catton Park for the 2022 Continental Thunder Run. A 24-hour based trail relay (and solo) race to which we always looked forward. Six teams over 4 categories and one soloist entered.
The alarms went off early, 04:30 early, as the forward recon car park crew of the Parkers and the Davies’s rolled the caravans into position, whilts the forward recon cars of Pete, Claudie, Chris, Jill and Collette arrived at the rolling road block side of Walton ready to get their wheels a-turning.
Things were different this year, it looked professional and we did not know which group would get on first. The car park released first as the roads were held. Into the bunfight of space grabbing and a well-practised drill paid us back well. A good run and pitch-side spot grabbed just big enough for all of us. The most frantic and anxious 5 mins of the whole weekend were completed.
We set up and the locals at these events familiarised themselves with us and old friendships between the groups were re-establisehd. The Northbrook logo was everywhere for all the clubs to see.
Saturday morning saw a few heads worse for wear as Alan Smith and Alex Gould were up first in the morning pre-10k event. Reporting back that conditions were hard underfoot, everyone changed to road shoes.
The start is frantic, a full on sprint to the 1st hill and our starters coped well. It was warm but clouding over, Matt setting the pace as Simon, Francis, Sally, Pete and Verity set their teams rolling with Rich completing his first of many legs. As the cycles progressed, team positions in the competition started to form and the laps started to take their tolls. Caroline first with a previous knee injury, Natasha, trying to protect a hip injury, Pete taking 2 tumbles in the dark to put him out. But the team cycles kept rolling. Daybreak, and battered legs were being massaged and rolled, sleep deprived bodies shaken for excitement levels for the next lap, fuel taken in and fluids maintained as the exit plans started to form. Everyone was giving everything they had with every ounce of energy, each one getting the Northbrook reception and each one showing why they were out there. This was stuff of childhood stories, written for heroes who would not give in.
This was tr24 2022 being written in the Northbrook legends book. 36 heroes, some very new to the event, helpers/wives and children galore supporting the club as we kept the laps rotating. The run in at the end with all the teams supporting their lone runner out on the glory legs. The Northbrook flag was paraded down the finish straight for the final time. There were celebrations in the bar before we tidied it all away for another year (or at least till Equinox) – Spencer

One of the club’s more traditional events made a welcome return last night as 44 runners (and one dog!) completed the off road course from Hampton-in-Arden to Tile Hill.
Fortunately, after the extreme weather of Monday and Tuesday, conditions were a lot more conducive for running last night. The trains were operating more or less on time, so the poor old timekeeper was able to get back to the finish to record all of the performances.
It was close battle at the sharp end, as Damien Dear (and his dog ‘Biscuit’) finally showed a clean pair of heels (and paws) to Mr Turvey on the final run down Duggins Lane to the finish line.
A number of the finishers enjoyed a well-earned drink in the Auction House pub afterwards – Bob Adams
Sir Titmus Summer Trot – Saltaire Half-Marathon – 17 July HM

ALAN SMITH
On the hottest day of the year so far, this was not ideal conditions for a half! Part of the "It’s Grim Up North Running" series, this was a multi-distance run, all starting and finishing at the same place in the village of Saltaire, from 5k to Ultra Marathon. A double out and back route along a canal, running 5k one way, 5k back to the start point again, and then 5.5k the other way and back again. 303 people registered for all the events, but I think the heat must have put people off, as around 200 people took part.
No wind and little shade did not bode well. I started off at a reasonable pace, and because the out the back style, I was able count how many were ahead of me, I was 10th at 5k. I picked a few off on the next 5k passing the 10k mark in 7th place in 52 minutes. This was roughly my Northbrook 10k finish time from last week, so I realised I’d gone off too fast.
The 2nd half was much harder, as there were locks along this section of the canal, meaning hills to climb. But hills up meant hills down on the way back. My times dropped as the heat took its toll. The last 4 miles were brutal and I lost a couple of places, but managed to finish 9th out of a field of 50 finishers.
The goodies at the end were fantastic, a nice bit of bling, a selection of fruit (melon, pineapple etc.) to help ourselves to, a bag of sweets, a melted(!) ice pop, a bottle of beer and a can of soft drink.
Definitely doing this one again, although I might plump for the Autumn one next time.

Tori Boyle
On what was one of the hottest days of the year so far 393 athletes lined up for the 18th staging of the Northbrook 10k race run on closed roads along the lanes of Allesley and Corley.
The 45-strong Northbrook contingent was led home by Tom Mitchell with Pete Stafford hot on his heels a few places behind.
Laurels go to Tori Boyle, 1st female under 20 and to Debbie Campbell with a 3rd FV55 finish.
Lakeland Trails Ultra 100Km, Ambleside – 9 July OTH
| Cliff Evans | 17:25:27 |
My first 100k race, in fact, this was my first race over 40 miles so I also popped my 50-mile cherry! I’d managed to get 2 hours of sleep before we gathered in Rothay park for our midnight start. I thought everyone looked way fitter, younger, and more competent than me and this was a view that was reinforced as I quickly found myself watching most of the runners disappear into the hills as we headed out of town. "Run your own race," I told myself, which was the first of many internal conversations I was going to have over the next 17 hours.
CLIFF EVANS
The climb and descent on steep loose boulders required a lot of concentration, particularly as my head torch dimmed to the battery-saving mode in the final stretch (I’d not considered changing the battery pack in the dark and that’s definitely a lesson learned) but the battery held out and I was rewarded by my first runner’s sunrise. I was not disappointed, it will live long in my memory.
My first big climb was done and I was feeling relieved I’d not injured myself in the dark. Joanne had volunteered for Checkpoint 3 in Bampton which I hit at 6 am and as I stuffed porridge and bacon butties down my throat Joanne re-filled my bladder. "You’re not drinking enough fluid, I hardly had to re-fill this!" Solid advice and from that point deliberately drank more than I thought I needed, how important that was going to be later in the race as temperatures started to climb.
I like to split my races into thirds; the first third "feeling comfortable", the middle third "warmed up and cruising" and the last third "whatever you have left." The first third was done, time to kick on. The middle section had the least elevation and some good running surfaces and despite a missed turn which resulted in a half-mile detour (more internal conversation had at that point) I felt like I was making good progress and starting to peg back a few 100k runners. I met Joanne again in Glenridding and gave myself 10 minutes at the checkpoint taping up battered toes, changing socks (oh how good did that feel) and generally getting myself ready for the final third -"Whatever I had left."

This is where running the 55k last year really helped. I knew Glenridding to Grassmere was going to be a real slog, a long steady climb for about 2 miles, followed by some mountain goat style descent on tired legs, so I mentally prepared for the long haul and took it steady. I was passed by dozens of runners from the shorter 14, 23, and 55k races who had now joined the route, only to see many of them sheltering in whatever shaded area they could find further along the pass. I felt that getting through this section was the last significant hurdle and this was a mistake. With 3 more smaller climbs and temperatures now at there hottest things started to get really tough. I barely paused at checkpoint 7, and then ran out of fluid about 2 miles from checkpoint 8, and I started to cook. "You’ve done your first 50 miles, you could quit now." Headgames! Just when I needed it Joanne met me just before the next CP and I got my head straight. I made sure I properly hydrated and threw some carbs down my neck and split my last 10 miles into three again – 5k at a time, one foot in front of the other.
My spirits were lifted when I got to the idyllic Blea Tarn, a highlight from my 55k last year and as tired and as sore as I was, you just can’t look at those views and not be inspired. 10k to go and I knew I was going to finish. 5k to go and it was how many people can I pass before the finish line? About a dozen as it turned out and before I knew it, the finish line beckoned. Had to stop and give Joanne a kiss before crossing the line, what a lucky man I am to have such a thoughtful and selfless person in my life, her support made all the difference.
A wonderful race, with incredible support and spectacular views. Not the easiest of 100k’s perhaps, but the rewards are worth it.
Scrumpy Scurry, Weston’s Cider Mill, Much Marcle – 9 July OTH

This novelty event came up from a small and upcoming events organiser that grabbed my interest so I decided to support them. The idea was simple, based in the orchard at Weston’s Cider Mill it was a 5k run. Tracey sent me down with a shopping list.

A total of 3 laps, with a cider on every lap. Thought it would be a bit different. I arrived to find some sadist had planted their orchard on a hill, a big hill. I expected the cider to be a small couple of mouthfuls, and given the heat I thought this would be about right.
It was a small field and I found my spot on the 1st lap, then the horror, there were no short measures. It was a pint, a whole pint. This was not going to be pretty. Choosing the cloudiest and flattest one I proceeded to try to drink as quickly as I could and set off again, back up the hill. Could not be that bad as I held my spot and was gravity assisted downhill as I approached the cider stop again. Another pint and this time up the hill I could start to feel the cider weight, but I managed to hang on to my spot, again much grateful of gravity to get me to the finish.
Through the finish, and then a 3rd "finishers" pint as insisted on by the organisers as I lay down in the heat soaking up the rays, and the cider. With a complimentary bottle for finishing as well it was very enjoyable day trip.

This was a unique 24-hour team relay organised by our club friends who have created KORC races in 2020. The mission for each team was 12 stories back to “the library desk” at base camp in Greenhill Caravan Park near Stratford.
Teams set off on 12 missions some solo and some requiring a team effort from 1 mile to 12 miles. Each was a different challenge to run to the story location and collect a character part/symbol to build the team character back at base camp. Using the Stratford on Avon canal as a “spine” to most runs we were often taken off the canal path into meadows, trails and woodland on a discovery mission! We were aided by maps and a story booklet describing each route.
This is one for annual calendar. The KORC team (Spencer, Tracey , Sara and Kelly) already have the 2023 event planned. Charging only an amount cover costs this family event provides Friday night entertainment in small camp site with full amenities – it’s all exclusive to the event for the whole weekend.
Congratulations to KORC races and all who ran – Kevin

With six entrants for the 2022 Man v Coast race in Cornwall, Northbrook were going to be well represented once again following the successful trip last year. By Friday we were down a man, as Adrian Lowe was unable to make it. The remaining fearless five made their way to the very far end of the country for this 25-mile race incorporating trail running and the odd sea-based activity.
CHRIS ARCHER
Saturday morning came at Marazion just by St Michael’s Mount, welcome cool and threatening rain that didn’t ever come. Off they set, first heading north over the spine of the county from the south coast to the north. By the second checkpoint at Pendeen lighthouse the different levels of physical and mental preparedness and fitness were starting to show. Simon, starting in a later wave, was on good pace and passed the other four. Pete, carrying injury, kept up a steady pace with the other three staying together for the remainder of the race. Following the coast path and onto Sennen for some body-boarding, rock-hopping, sea-limbo watched over by inflatable killer whales and the bit where you jump off a cliff into the sea. Or are pushed, Claudie.
The runners were welcomed home at Lands End by an enthusiastic crowd for a welcome cup of soup and can of beer. Pete and Simon then bade their farewells with their respective support teams – Lisa Abbott and I having taken in the Lands End parkrun first thing before attending to our support duties. In due course we took ourselves for a walk back to Sennen for some excellent fish and chips, a bottle of prosecco and another beer before turning in on a pretty good day in the running calendar – Chris Archer
