* debut at marathon distance

After marathon training in temperatures a few degrees above zero during the winter months, it was a surprise to see that summer had paid Brighton an early visit on marathon day. It was a beautiful day with clear skies, a light breeze and temperatures hitting double figures during early morning. Around 16,000 runners filled Preston Park presenting a sight I’d never previously witnessed with the sheer volume. It was well organised though, and as race time approached we were shepherded into the racing corrals based on our predicted finish times.
At 9:15, the klaxon blew and off we set. The route took us down towards the seafront, with a few return loops to ensure we could clock up the mileage. From the outset the support was amazing – it was estimated that 150,000 lined the streets to cheer us on – and I was buoyed each time I saw my family waving their posters and cheering. We reached the seafront after 5 miles or so and it was then out and back racing along the seafront, with a dip into town which gave us the opportunity to see the elite runners heading towards us at breakneck speed in the contraflow.
This was my first marathon, and despite having heard all the guidance: pace it sensibly; the race starts at 20 miles; try for a negative split; just enjoy it and aim to make it round etc etc, I’d set off doing my best impression of a greyhound with the adrenaline coursing through my veins and all sense having long since evaporated in Preston Park. I clipped the half way mark at my regular half-marathon pace. I felt invincible though, despite it being a big mistake. By the 16 mile mark I started to tire and invincibility switched to determination. By 22 miles, after an encouraging shout from Liz Pharoah, I slammed into the infamous wall.
The breeze had disappeared and the temperature was rising into the 20’s. Great for those spectating and on the beach. Not so welcome for us runners! Determination turned into despair. I made the cardinal mistake of deciding to take a short walk which then turned into the longest 4 miles of my life as I headed towards the finish line with a light jog/stagger, steeling myself with the mantra that my family would not witness me walking in the last mile. Sensibly, a large proportion of runners decided to save their efforts for another day, and 12,000 passed over the finish line, including 7 in Northbrook colours.
We all met on Brighton beach to compose ourselves, dip our toes in the still chilly sea, and utter ‘never again’ (until next time). I can only sum it up by saying ‘what an adventure’. Will I do another? Probably – Terry
