The forecast was for incessant rain, so it was a great relief when approaching the Oulton Park circuit that the clouds cleared and bar a few short showers, we enjoyed clear skies. This unexpected fortune no doubt spurred everyone on to excellent performances on the 2.6 mile circuit undulating course.

Seven Northbrookers took on the 20-mile and half-marathon events, with the format allowing us to offer each other encouragement as we passed each other. The event was topped off with Martin winning the event and Sam winning as first female. It was excellent to cheer everyone in along the Oulton Park finishing straight and there were smiles all round.

For anyone thinking of doing the event, I recommend it – the organisation by RunThrough was first class – Terry

This was ‘proper’ cross-country; driving rain, freezing cold wind, zero visibility, 1100ft of elevation, 2 stream crossings per lap, plenty of mud and end to end fun.

This was hard, but the 14 Northbrookers who braved the conditions did the club proud. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and delivered the goods – Rob

Benidorm 10k – 22 November 10K

JULIE COZENS

Fabulous event as usual. This year due to the number of participants the 10k started at 5pm and the half-marathon at 6pm. For those running the 10k it was so much better as there was more space to run in, and it was run in daylight.

The support around the course was tremendous. The weather was much cooler this year, but that made running conditions better. Can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Northbrook Women’s Team – 2nd
Northbrook Women’s Masters Team – 1st

The Northbrook women turned out in fantastic strength and spirit, fielding a large and determined squad that made a real impact across the course. With 32 women racing one of the biggest female turnouts of the entire event, the team presence was impossible to miss and even more impressive to watch unfold in the results with 3 of our runners finishing in the top 10 of the Women’s Division 2.

Right from the gun, the Northbrook women showed they meant business. Natasha White delivered a superb performance, storming home in 24:54 and clinching 1st place overall and 1st in the Masters category, A brilliant, composed run that set the tone for the rest of the team. From the middle pack to the later stages, the women ran with grit, teamwork, and determination. Many runners finished in clusters, helping each other maintain pace, push through tough sections, and pick off places in the final kilometres. Whether running, cheering, or pacing, the Northbrook women embodied exactly what makes club racing special, Encouragement on the start line, support during tough patches and a drive to finish strong for the team With 32 Northbrook women on the start line, this was an incredible way to open the season.

A huge shout-out to our supporters and to the Northbrook men who arrived early to cheer us on your support meant everything.

A brilliant performance by our Northbrook women at the first league cross-country of the season, with a second place overall and a first place in the Masters – Joanne

Northbrook Men’s A Team – 12th – 632 points
Northbrook Men’s B Team – 9th – 1033 points

The eagerly anticipated 1st League race in the season came around fast, and despite the drop-outs in advance, we fielded 29 men. With our usual leader away on a well-deserved break and some of our Level 1 guys dropping out, what was always going to be a tough season got off to an even tougher start.

Torrential rain the day before and with the women softening up the course for us in advance the course was going to be the best it had been for a few years. The traditional ditch had been replaced with an ankle wetter and the traditional hill cut short with a different route up to it, it was one to look forward to. With all 3 divisions there to celebrate the League’s 100 years the start was fast. We also had a landmark in one of our runners starting in a season when he will have run in every Division of the League and Fraser running his 100th league race.

The 200 metre sprint to the course was flat out no matter where in the field you were. Northbrook settled into their races with sunbursts dropping in right through the field. 3 laps and we knew about it, with wet feet, calves screaming, quads turning to rocks and covered in mud we started to finish. With Tom and Jay leading us home we all gave everything we could out there on the day. Well done all.

Great runs by all but it’s an uphill battle for the remaining 3 races. Cheltenham next with a stream crossing due.
Men gear up, its going to take everyone one of us on form/finding form to keep our Division 2 status.
Spencer

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

One of my favourite trail challenges/runs. However, didn’t want to go. Hadn’t run for weeks and my motivation to train or run had disappeared along with the 101st marathon. Made it there with some cajoling and support.

It was a beautiful sunny morning. The route is made up of muddy fields, mud, lovely woods, mud, canal towpaths, mud, hilly climbs and .. lovely soup and apple crumble for all at the finish.

It was the 20th year of the challenge organised by locals for charities. Highly recommended.

PS – made it to the finish, just about!

Episode V-mile : The Troopers Dash

In a county far, far away it was a time for endurance and sweat. Rebel runners from across the ages gathered to complete in the legendary 5 mile run of the tunnel. Bright kit was required, step up one brave soul, clad head to head in the armour of the Empire. A stormtrooper on a mission, not of conquest but of cardio.

Armed with determination, chafing cream and questionable visibility, this trooper defied the odds, outran the rebellion, and proved once and for all that imperial armour does the distance.
The Force was with me.

Mad Jack’s 5 Mile – 6 November5M

209 Spencer Davies 00:49:43

Mad Jack’s 5 mile, in the grounds of the National Trust’s Attingham Hall, makes it a great venue for a particularly challenging course. Not so much the elevation, but the log jumps, the fence crossings, the concrete sections, the bramble/nettle path and the dip through the ice cold pond at the end. The sort of event that can be affected by the weather. This year it was sunny and warm, my previous visit had sideways rain and gale force winds.

Saturday came about for the very local cross-country taster at Warwick university, 2 miles with a puddle, a bit of mud and a hill thrown in. Perfect for people to practise their off-road running.

Captain Jo did a great job beating the drum to get us to 7 teams and with the organisers to achieve a realistic entry price.

On the day all turned up, our one pace team flew and the balacning act for the remainder of the teams worked well. Good job Jo – Spencer
