The long planned trip to Majorca where Northbrook were going to be on tour arrived. With arrivals from Thursday to Friday our numbers gradually swelled.

Friday morning saw the Thursday arrivals participate in the breakfast runs. A 5k out and back organised event that gave the legs a chance to turn over and build up the breakfast appetite. Friday night was the usual hyper-social scene, spread through a few venues. The Saturday morning unofficial breakfast runs saw a few sore heads descend to the event village in a nice 25 degree heat. Timing was irrelevant, it was about being part of something. After a quick refreshment stop and number collection we all retired in our own directions back to hotel pools and bars. Saturday night was a lot quieter with groups everywhere.

Sunday was the big day and the venue struggled to cope with so many runners. Despite this, Northbrook shone our own sunbursts back at the Balearic sun and we raised the temperature. Great runs from all with 4 podium age grade finishers. Well done all. After that the hotel pools and bars started to fill with celebrations before the departures began.

A great weekend in a new venue – Spencer

More than 30 Northbrookers left the gloomy UK weather behind to head off to sunny Majorca for the running festival. With a mix of tourism and running, most opted for the 10k, with three hardy members taking on the half-marathon. With the slight time difference in Palma, we travelled to the race village in darkness ahead of an 8am start to avoid the heat.

Just after sunrise, we all set off on the 10k with the half- marathon & marathon runners starting 15 min later. In contrast to the majority of UK races, there was little streaming of runners by predicted time, so for many the start turned into a congested free-for-all as participants sought to establish race pace.

The majority of the 10k was alongside the historic cathedral and through the medieval narrow lanes, whereas the half & full marathoners had a long out & back looking at the multi-million pound yachts bobbing about in the Mediterranean. For the 10k, we finished before it got too hot, and there was relief for the half-marathoners to run the final 6 miles in the sheltered lanes. Thankfully none of us opted for the marathon as the sun was beating down and it looked an awful slog as the runners melted.

It was excellent to see some Northbrookers cheering us on towards the finish to boost our spirits. There were good performances all round with age category top 3 positions for both Northbrook women & men. Post race, it was time to reflect on a good morning for all over an ice-cream as we planned some sightseeing for the remainder of the weekend – Terry

Third time I’ve done this, and this time was because of my deferral last year. Weather forecast had been looking grim all week, but suddenly changed to say perfect weather, with the rain not scheduled to arrive till the afternoon.
Extremely well organised with loads of toilets at the start, water/gel/isotonic drink stations every 3 miles, and portable toilets every 2 or 3 miles.

I had a reasonably consistent pace for the 1st 16 or 17 miles, but then started to slow down a bit. This was when my caffeine chewing gum came to the rescue, and I got a second wind from mile 19 until the finish, even managing to run up the final hill.

By the time the rain started, I was safely on the bus going back to the Park & Ride – Alan

Former Northbrook member Tim Wright led us home again, finishing in 38th place in 37.07.
Rob was first of the current Northbrook runners, before he headed back to Coventry, for a Northbrook club session later in the day.
I was happy to be a bit quicker than last year on a challenging course – Mark

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

A little trip to visit a friend in Chelmsford for a catch-up ended up with an entry to the Chelmsford Marathon, Marathon 101and an opportunity to wear my shiny new 100 marathon club t-shirt. I felt very proud!

It was lovely cool and mostly sunny weather. The nice country lanes were flat in the first half and rather undulating in the second.

I was very pleased to see the finish and grab a lovely ice cream.

This was Rob’s first half-marathon and he absolutely smashed it, getting a sub-2hrs even with a knee injury. It was very foggy but this lifted halfway through.

There was great support all the way round as it was a closed road race and it was fairly flat with no hills – Lisa
