Wokingham Half-Marathon – 23 February HM

Amanda and I headed off down to Wokingham for the 3rd successive year in search of fast times on a relatively flat course in a stacked event.
A brilliantly organised event and a nice leafy course around the lanes of Wokingham.
Amanda clocked her fastest half time for nearly 10 years so a brilliant result for her.

The day of the Nationals came round and we were counting the drop-outs to ensure we had full teams. 4 women and 9 men meant everyone had to finish for the teams to count and for everyone’s runs to count.
With 3 supporters who were tasked with being the voices we needed we arrived. As we got off the tube we could see mud clad cross-country people heading back having ran; this was a mile away so we knew what was coming. As we arrived the normally green Parliament Hill was a sea of mud. This was going to get everywhere. Of our 13 runners, 2 of our women had never experienced anything like this before and 1 had a bad knee. For our men, 1 was struggling with his back, 1 had only 1 leg and 1 had a bad hip. This was going to be a pain killers fuelled run for all of us.
The women were first up and we men watched from half-way up the start hill as the women stampeded through us. Their faces told us everything we needed to know. They were already mud-splattered down the front and caked down the back. Getting down and dirty in the mud was definitly going to be the order of the day. As the women raced for the glory of the club and the glory of the team the men prepared.
We laced them up, the numbers were strapped on, the spikes were set to 15 mm. Painkillers taken we headed towards the start amongst 1800 other men. The newly introduced King and Queen of the Hill competitions certainly entertained as the leaders in both races sprinted the full 400 mtrs. We mere mortals got up where we could. The mud was thick and sticky, from shin to knee deep and at times running like slurry. The hills were unforgiving and recognizable vests soon became a colour of mud.
With 9 to finish to count the men had to finish. For me, the screaming uncomfortableness I was suffering before the race meant I cursed our non-show as I resigned myself to the 3rd lap. The camaraderie between us injured/ill tail runners was amazing as we supported, dragged, pulled and cursed at each other to get ourselves round – Spencer

A home fixture at Coombe Park for the final Midlands Women’s League cross-country race of the 2024/25 season. Men and women together and lots of supporters to cheer everyone on, as well as strategically placed marshals to provide that extra boost on some of the lonelier spots of the course.
An amazing 24 women laced up their spikes & wore their sunbursts for the canter around Coombe’s lumpy, sometimes muddy fields and ending with a long, energy sapping home straight where they were cheered & screamed home by the Northbrook crowds.
Natasha White was first Northbrooker home, second in the race overall and first in the Masters race. Amanda Deavy was second over the line, sixth in the race and third Master. Marie Edmunds and Kathryn Adams were our third and fourth finishers. It was a brilliant team performance as the Northbrook women dug deep down that final stretch, battling sprint finishes and knowing that every effort counted.
And every effort was rewarded as Northbrook women finished in SECOND position on the day, one annoying point behind Royal Sutton and Coldfield, but we took the local bragging rights over Spa, Kenilworth, Sphinx, Massey and Godiva. We were fourth in the Masters race on the day with Trentham taking the honours. Over the four races our final position was 6th out of a league of 29 and 5th Masters team, highly credible.
We had 30 brilliant women representing us across the four races and eight ever-presents, Tori Boyle, Joanne Evans, Joanna Grace, Kathryn Adams, Kelly Parker, Michelle Edwards, Tracy Jefferson and Judith Hayley plus we had the ever-present flapjacks from Rob Cox.
This is fantastic base to build on for 2025/26 and the excitement from Coombe will hopefully galvanise more Northbrook women to embrace the mud. It was my last race as women’s team captain and I could not be prouder of all the women who been part of the Cross-Country team. Handing the baton now onto Jo Evans, who will be fabulous Women’s Captain – Sally Eason
