Bourton Half-Marathon – 29 September HM

  Craig Holmes 1:27:09
  Chris Goodman 1:27:41
  Kirstie Murray 2:07:45

We were due to run the Stratford half-marathon, which was postponed due to flooding. After some research, we found Bourton half-marathon which did on the day entries, so we decided to travel over and see if we could enter. We were warned about the hills; however it was a really lovely course – plenty of lovely downhill and flat to accompany the uphill, and a really friendly and welcoming running club who organised it (though of course, Northbrook is still the best).

We think this is a race we will definitely do again – Kirstie

The 50th anniversary of the Berlin marathon was always going to be a special event for both us and all the other participants. Flying out there we saw reports that the expo was chaos and badly organised. We had our doubts and went there as soon as we landed. Fortunately those doubts were proven wrong with the exception of running out of some of the popular sizes of finisher Tee shirts. (Oddly given before the running of the race). We were in and out of the expo within 49 minutes taking the brave decision of not buying anymore junk we didn’t need.

TIM HUIGHES

The athletes’ village was well laid out and only had one query, despite ample toilets the bushes were the most popular comfort break area. We got into our race pens 1 hour before the start of the race so took that time to stretch and chill out. When the front waves went off the MCs did a cracking job of warming up the waiting masses including an Icelandic Viking thunderclap rendition which should be included into every race. 58,000 people were due to start this race and with that many people on course things did get congested at times.

The course was mostly flat and therefore fast. The crowds were rapturous all the way round with regular water stops which gave me a much needed break. During the run we saw runners from countries across the globe; how many times do you get to run and chat with people from.Panama and Korea at the same time? There was a fantastic atmosphere all around the course and well planned out bag drop stations were an asset to the course. Being the 50th year they couldn’t run a normal race and with 80,000 participants across the race weekend and 58,212 marathon participants, and 54,280 runners completing the marathon made it officially the largest marathon on the planet.

TIM HUGHES

For me personally, my training plan has been obliterated by injuries and after the half-way point they started to bite me. At one point I was 10 minutes ahead of schedule, however hip and ankle problems caused me to lose time and to finish 3 minutes behind my target PB time.

An absolutely brilliant event – Tim

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

After some bad reactions to chemo 4, I had not many expectations but I thought a couple of 10k laps would be walkable. On Friday, we left at 8.15am to help Spencer and Tracey set up and queue to get in as early as possible when the gates opened to Belvoir Park at 12 noon. Spencer and Tracey raced in first, caravan bouncing behind their van across the field to secure a prime spot and set up was complete by 2pm. Others started arriving, so we mooched the stalls and then gathered in the beer bus! A great time was had by all and we continued the race prep party till late. I had an early night but kudos to those who stayed up.

My alarm was set for Saturday morning, and it was a lovely morning. We walked the Belvoir Castle parkrun with Northbrook friends, taking 50+ minutes. Then everyone got ready. I set off at the mass start with hundreds of keen beans including Northbrook number 1 runners in our two Northbrook teams, Jane Ward (and guest appearance by Sam Ward) pair and Jan Watson and Becky Barker pair, in a heatwave at 12noon and kept going through thunderstorms and heavy ran and mud and slippery grass and mist. Had short breaks and a couple of naps until just after 12 noon the next day. Ran 3 laps, walked 7. Got my bronze 10 lap pin. Met some lovely people. Got soaked to my knickers.

Lots of help and support from Northbrook runners, partners and friends. Too many to mention but they got me through it when I was going to give up. Quite a few injured Northbrookers had also come along to support and were volunteering at the event. I would like to thank them especially for being there when they could have been at home and dry.

Next chemo tomorrow. Onwards and upwards – Claudie

Northbrook again did well at the annual Autumn Women’s 4-stage and Men’s 6-Stage Road Relays at Sutton Park. The usual pre-race challenges of the venue entry bottleneck surprised some of our first time eventers, but all arrived in good time for the race and to cheer each other on.

The glorious sunshine earlier in the day had been replaced by ominous clouds and rolling thunder, and while we experienced some heavy showers, we were spared the biblical downpours until travelling home. All our teams performed well in what was a challenging event in which we had the opportunity to run alongside the country’s best. This spurred everyone on to put on their best show and the smiles at the end paid testament to that.

Thanks are due to all our runners and our supporters whose cheers to encourage the runners up the last hill to the finish always generate that extra energy on the approach to the finishing line – Terry

CLIFF EVANS

Starting in Goring, Dave Hartopp and I headed out with 250 other runners including DJ Chris Evans and his wife Tash along the Thames towards the majestic Mapledurham house. This race had so many stunning views! We headed north through the village of Turville (Vicar of Dibley) and Cobstone windmill (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). There was more elevation up into the Chilterns before heading back to Goring via more stunning views and woodland trails.

51miles, 6000ft and 7 black toenails later I arrived back in Goring 10mins inside the13hrs deadline.

The National Cross-Country Championships re-arranged from a sodden February was set to take place at the same venue on an un cross-country type of day in September. The call had gone out and we were only going if we could field full teams. Step up our 4 women and our 6 men (with one very late step-in) who represented the club as only Northbrookers can.

Having never been before to this venue we were not sure what to expect, but it was a lovely large venue with no parking issues. It was 2 large laps for the women and 3 large laps for the men. Numbers for the event were far lower than normal, probably due to it not being cross-country season, with the WRRL on Sunday affecting the Midlands clubs take ups, Berlin and other Autumn marathons on the horizon and the international event in Australia all taking participants away.

With the heat beating down on us, and a course (though not the hilliest) that felt all uphill and bone dry our women were the first of us to fly the sunburst over the dry fields. Round and round they went, being cheered on by families and the men as they went. Kathryn led them home while Kelly ensured the team was complete. A great run by all 4 women who appreciated the shade from the gazebo and their fluids afterwards.

Next were the men; most had opted for road shoes (yes it was that dry) and despite low numbers they were still quick and the 6 men soon separated after the start into their own races. With Kathryn and Jo supporting, Matt led us home, Craig standing in needing regular rests and Adrian who only had 2 hours notice to make sure our team was complete. 12k in the heat with no fluids available was not right and this is something the organisers may need to bear in mind if they ever stage a Summer cross-country race again.

We went, we conquered and we started off our Winter handicap competition for the year. Well done to the 10 Northbrookers who showed what it means to represent our club. Next up should be the Midlands relays (when it gets announced you will know) – Spencer

A very hilly, but beautiful course in Cwncarn Forest, with stunning views of the Mendip Hills over the Severn Estuary.

However it was difficult to enjoy the hills as I was in the red the whole race. Pleased to finish 5th in my age group.
