**only 2.9 miles completed due
to a fractured ankle
We had been planning this one for a while, what we thought was a new and upcoming 24 hour race with our favourite race organisers down in Dorset. Just 2 weeks before the event, they announced that this would be their last ever race; gutted was an under estimate of how we felt. But we weren’t glum, instead we went down to celebrate all the good times this company had given us. The idea was to give Jenny a nice introduction to 24-hr team relay racing while at the same time give the rest of us a chance to continue on our love for all things crazy. Of course it was also a honeymoon for the 2 newly weds, though there were a few sore heads from the wedding celebrations the day before.
Friday was a heat wave, 30 degree heat and on a cider farm. This was dangerous. After pitching up and trying to resist the farmer selling his goods, it was time to get serious, lace up and toe the line. In the heat I was not looking forward to it, especially as the team attire was a cow tutu with a unicorn headpiece, but I got on with the team instruction.
A previous participant down here (Mark) had reassured me the course was boring and flat. A downhill sprint to start took my breath away to be greeted as I turned the corner by a climb straight back up, why oh why do I ever listen to other people? I adjusted into a slog up the climb to discover the remainder of the lap, though boring was certainly undulating and with no shade the heat was not pleasant. A quick stop at the infamous "white star-love station" resulted in 2 schnapps and a cider, purely to get me back up the last climb before I handed onto Chris as he powered out, still in the ferocious heat. This was supposed to be enjoyable with no time pressure.
The team started the rotation and as the sun dipped, the temperatures dropped, the shadows became dusk and it was time to roll out again. This time, I knew the course, no heat and I could pick the pace up, just missing the schnapps cut off at the station I was grumpy as I handed onto Chris, and the team started their rotation again, all happy. I stayed up to watch Tracey go out at just after 2am, she looked happy as she slipped off into the dark and I settled back down for another 40 minutes snooze.
After an hour, Jenny and I were watching as a car went out onto the course, we thought Tracey (nervous about her footing was just taking it easy), we watched as the same car came back (we thought it was a shift change on the love station). 5 minutes later the night RD approached us to inform us "we no longer had a Tracey on our team". Surprised and slightly panicking we asked for more info as all sorts of worries sprang to mind.
Had she found a prosecco shop?
Ws it a honey badger attack?
Had she got lost?
No, just over 2 miles in on a manicured section of grass, Tracey had found a huge hole and went down. She thought she had sprained her ankle; in-fact it was a break. She had to hobble 0.8 of a mile on a broken ankle to get the news back to get her team going again.
With that Jenny (next up) was ushered out as all sorts of scenarios were flying through my head. Retrieving Tracey from the ambulance (it appears the car heading out and returning was to get Tracey) we got her into the caravan with her leg raised. She was waiting to judge if she though she needed to go to A&E. Jenny was due in, so I flew round being careful of footing trying to clear my head. When I got back, it was obvious that the hospital trip was necessary and we left a message for the team to carry on as best they could.
For nearly 5 hours Tracey and I sat in A&E while the team pulled together and kept rotating. What an initiation Jenny was having. 5 hours was a lucky escape for us. Tracey now adorned with a black "beckham boot" for the next 6 weeks was supported on her ankle so she could at least move round a campsite.
We returned to find the team still going, though close to being on their knees. The weather had turned foul and it was a mixture of heavy rain that soaked you through and high humidity that … soaked you through. I was itching to get out and burn off some frustration and the fastest lap ensued for me. We decided to sub Pete in for Tracey as her incomplete lap did not count. Pete being Pet went and recorded the fastest lap of the weekend. Incognito was not upheld but well done Pete.
Now we entered the last cycle and weary legs, tired heads, damp kit from the drizzle were sent back out as we kept 2 laps ahead of our opponents. They did not give in, and neither did we. The last lap and Chris went out, and after 6 laps Chris achieved his fastest lap of the weekend, bringing our total to 31 laps completed and 1st team of 6.
What a great way to say farewell to our white star adventures. A great event with drama and winning ways thrown in. The event will continue next year, but under different ownership, Tracey has a demon to excise, Jenny is already looking at returning, and the cider is still being produced for next year. I think we will be back – Spencer

On a lovely Summer evening sixty Club members took the train from Tile Hill to Hampton-in-Arden where they were met by another dozen who had arrived there by running the route in reverse. With several participants having only recently joined the Club, and others who were also unfamiliar with the route some of our more experienced club members volunteered to act as guides at various paces, or as sweepers. With this in place everyone got back without getting lost as has happened in previous years.
Although billed as a race the event is viewed by most as a very pleasant alternative to the normal Wednesday night routine training sessions, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the beautiful Warwickshire countryside.
With everyone accounted for the evening concluded with a re-hydration stop at the nearby Auction House pub.

A fabulous well organised event with a choice of 4 distances, 14k, 23k, 55k and 100k. The courses were way-marked and well marshalled with regular checkpoints. I did the 100k which started at midnight and comprised 11500 ft of elevation over some of the finest trails the Lake District has to offer.
