Droitwich Half-Marathon – 30 JuneHM

  Alan Smith 1:47:33

ALAN SMITH

This one is usually in March, but had been rearranged due to flooding. I couldn’t make the March date and remembered yesterday it was on and I found out there were “on the day” entries. For the 3rd year running the course was completely changed. Gone was the flat canal path section, meaning it was all road, and lots of hills!

It’s a really picturesque part of the Midlands, and that coupled with a great venue for the start/finish with loads of free parking and a café make it one of my favourite hilly half-marathons. It’s only a 45 minute drive away, so hopefully we may see a few more Northbrookers in the future.

Derbion Ramathon (Half-Marathon), Derby – 30 JuneHM

  Steve Turvey 1:28:58

I got a free entry to a Run for All event after volunteering at Coventry Half in 2023. My original plan of the Sheffield Half had to be abandoned due to personal reasons, but Derby is a bit closer and on a date I could make.

The event was well organised, with easy parking in city centre, well marshalled, and a pretty flat course (fans of Derby 10 will recognise a few bits, although this course is more interesting overall). My target of sub-1:30 was made reasonably comfortably in the end, although the pacer overtaking me at 10 miles was a little unnerving!

I still need to decide where to go with the free entry from the 2024 Cov Half, but this is one I’d certainly consider going back to, maybe with a few more Northbrookers next time?

Many months ago somebody suggested a race called Beer21 run by a small trail events company called Canary Trail Events. The premise sounded simple. Run 21 miles and drink a beer after each lap and finish with a kebab.

Finally, this weekend it came to fruition. 8 Northbrookers headed down in the van to Mickleham Village Hall with a vague idea of what was happening. We knew it would be trail and we all had the mandatory kit of an Inflatable Canary (I can’t imagine where they got the idea from).
Once there we realised that it was a tiny event with only 30 entrants, of which 3 didn’t turn up. Rhino Chris was also there with his Rhino outfit. The beers were ½ a pint of Heineken and it was a strict 5-hour cut-off to complete the laps, beers and kebab.

Once the start pistol went it was a 20-yard dash to the beer table to consume beer number 1 before starting the first lap. It was a very tough but beautiful technical trail course with hills and descents to test the best of us. And of course, another beer at the end of each lap all whilst carrying that damn Canary. Damien flew round, lapping me twice to finish in a cracking 4th place a couple of minutes outside a podium position.

Despite being battered against all the trees and branches somehow my mandatory canary did not burst!
After finishing lap 7 the 8th beer needed to be consumed and then back into the village hall to collect your kebab. A dry kebab needed lashings of the provided garlic mayo before completing the event with another beer to stop your clock.

I managed to complete my 9th beer with 5 minutes to spare. Spencer was able to beat the run but the kebab beat him. The dryness was to much for his stomach after 21 tough miles. Caroline completed the distance but missed the cut off, a huge achievement with her current injured knee. Meanwhile Catherine, Claudie, Chris and Tracey all did their own laps to complete the tough challenge, Everybody getting further than they all expected.

A great fun inaugural event which we look forward to returning to next year – Tim

Lakeland Five Passes Ultra, Grasmere – 29 JuneOTH

  Tony Bowe 10:40:00

32 miles and 10,000 ft of elevation in the lovely Lake District. It started in Grasmere with Loughrigg the first climb, Red Screes the final climb and lots of up and down in between.
I sprained my ankle and tumbled head over heels at 8 miles, followed by a second fall later on, jolting my shoulder at about 20 miles. I felt like a proper fell runner by the end.

ROB RICHARDSON

Three intrepid Northbrookers braved the 27 degree heat and 160m climbing in the Weedon 10k, the self-styled hardest 10k in the Midlands and race no.5 of the East Midland Grand Prix. A super chilled old-school race with no faff and no frills. You pay £12, pin your number on your vest and run, no closed roads (but plenty of marshals), no medals, no T-shirts, and a cup of warm squash at the end.

Like all EMGP races, you travel back into the setting sun with the satisfaction of a job well done. Its is a hard hilly course, with a brute of a climb at 4k and a sting in the tail at 9k, but you are rewarded with a long 2k downhill finish. Even as I was blowing up the 1k long climb I was thinking, ‘at least I’m not watching England v Slovenia in the Group of the Death of Football’ – Rob

Snickerton Half-Marathon, Chasewater Country Park – 23 JuneHM

28 Chris Archer 3:03:04

A lovely event put on by Denzil of How Hard Can It Be Events with the option of 5km, 10km, half-marathon and full Marathon running 5km flat laps of Chasewater. I did the Half with Claudie doing her 80th full Marathon.

The only race I’ve done that involved crossing a live railway line (eight times in my case) as well as the more usual pedestrian, bike and goose dodging.

Tough in the heat, but got it done, with a Snickers for a prize. Yum!

Snickerton Marathon, Chasewater Country Park – 23 JuneM

11 Claudie Combelas 4:58:18

An impromptu decision to run this event as there didn’t appear to be any Sunday steady run going at the time. Thought I might as well give it a go. 8 laps of a lovely lake. It got hotter and hotter, busier and busier and at half way I discussed giving up. It was all getting too much. After asking the race director if I had time to walk the rest, I plodded on. Glad I did.

NoMad 50-Mile Ultra – 22 JuneOTH

23 Dave Fawkner 12:52:59

DAVE FAWKNER

Having picked up a knee niggle in Wednesdays GBU relays, I really thought I’d fail to get to the startline of this cracking 50-mile lap of Derby, but with a couple of rest days and pain killers, I started in the 6am wave and took things very easy.

The views were great and the miles ticked along with some great support at the cp’s, but the heat was slowly having its effect on me. Both calves were cramping from 40 miles, but then vomiting due to sun stroke after 46 miles left me kneeling down on the trail for a few minutes wondering how I was going to finish. Fortunately I knew the race sweeper who caught up with me 5 mins later and she was an absolute star. I was still enjoying the race and determined to get it done, so with a strong walk, a few runs and maybe the odd swear word over the last few stiles, I made it to the finish with 7 minutes to spare.

A small scale event with 50km and 50 mile options, so an ideal event for anyone that loves running the trails. It was brilliant!

Trail Marathon Wales (Half-Marathon) – 15 June M

240 Claudie Combelas 3:09:00
256 Chris Archer 3:32:02

Chris and I have both done this beautiful but very challenging trail run before. Set in Coed-y-Brenin, Snowdonia National Park the elevation was over 2200 feet. A very wet start but weather did improve but the hills didn’t. The last major hill goes on for a km and is not name the ‘sting in the tail’ for nothing.

We both suffered from lack of training but were happy to finish and enjoy the local ales in Dolgellau. We’ll be back hopefully healthier and better prepared next year – Claudie

The Wall, Carlisle to Newcastle – 14 June OTH

191 Alan Smith 15:53:13

ALAN SMITH

My goal was to finish before midnight even though the cutoff time was 9am on Sunday morning. The weather forecast looked grim, so the first decision was what shoes to start with and which ones to change into at mile 44. Luckily I went with Goretex trail shoes.

The first section contained a lot of trail and it lashed it down. I heard lots of squelchy shoes, but thankfully my feet stayed dry. I got a bit carried away in the first 15 miles, posting decent mile splits. The aid stations on this race are legendary, they are like cafes with various sandwiches, fruit, bacon sandwiches, pizza, soup, pasta, etc. There was even a sweet pick and mix stall at one of them! The problems came at a place near The Sill. The hills were relentless, it was like The Cleevewold with steps cut into the hillside. Why did Hadrian decide to put his wall here? Just when you thought you were at the top, you’d be met with another or a steep downhill then another hill. Reaching Hexham at 44 miles, it was time to change socks and shoes, but I could not change socks for fear of pulling plasters off my taped toes. Cushioned road shoes put a new spring in my step.

The mental issues kicked in here, when you realise there’s still a marathon to go. I was starting to feel fatigued, so decided to take some Pro Plus tablets.

ALAN SMITH

Perhaps taking 6 in one go is not a good idea, but they had the desired effect and I was buzzing and I started to pass a lot of people who were walking. Then the heavy rain started again which dampened the spirits slightly. I reached the final pitstop in Newburn and it was like a scene from Saving Private Ryan. Hypothermia was kicking in for a lot of people, and there were quite a few dropouts here. Seven miles to go and I was still buzzing with caffeine, and the sight of the Tyne Bridge in the distance was a welcome sight and I crossed the Millennium Bridge to finish at 10.53pm.

Although there were baked potatoes or chips at the end, food was the last thing on my mind. Mission was accomplished but I don’t think I’ll do it again, there are too many other Ultras to try out. Removing my shoes and socks I was met with carnage. Numerous damaged toe nails, and both my big toe nails appear to have been detached from the nail root. They’ll be coming off soon.

A glorious day, and I’m now looking forward to the next challenge, once my legs and feet stop hurting.

A very hot (surprising for County Cork) and hilly but beautiful woodland and lakeside two-lap parkrun.

Very proud of first lady.
