Enigma Easter Saturday Marathon – 30 March M

27 Dave Fawkner 05:28:15

A tough day in the heat, but over 20 minutes quicker than over the same Marathon course 2 weeks ago. All heading in the right direction thanks to the Northbrook training nights.

A great race on Good Friday to start the Easter weekend. Over 2 minutes quicker than last year for me.

Cleevewold – 24 March OTH

42 Alan Smith 02:19:26
43 Spencer Davies 02:20:33
58 Claudie Combelas 02:40:29

The day after the relays and 3 sets of tired legs made the journey south for the Cleevewold race. A very unflat 13 mile run around the surrounding hills. The weather was good with a cool chill in the air. This race is a must for those that like trail, its elevation alone is staggering. With the first 2 climbs feeling like they remove your calves through your mouth and the final new descent ensuring that your quads could explode at every step it’s not one for the fainthearted.

SPENCER DAVIES

Having done it before I eased off for the 1st 2 climbs (the one to the first trig point where the steps are cut ladderesque into the side of the near vertical climb still surprises me everytime). After that the gentler climb to the next trig point is wider and allows for progress through the field. This was Alan’s 1st time on the Cleevewold and he had his poles to train with in preparation for some other crazy activities later in the year. He powered past me on the 1st climb and soon disappeared from view.

Settling in for a run against myself the run was enjoyable. Then at the 2nd water station and the faint image of a sunburst with the red carrypack on came into view. From what was a gentle cruise around suddenly became a focus and I was determined to chase him. I must suggest to the organisers that maybe a cable car trip from the bottom of the valley to the top of Belas Knapp would be a nice reward. Unbeknown to us, Claudie at this point had become directionally challenged twice, or did she recall the hill that was in the section she missed? Either way with a bit of good fortune and some GPX trickery she came back onto course to complete.

Alan and I yo yo’d all the way to the end, but I was just not able to close the gap enough (though I don’t think he was even aware how close I was). 3 finishers, 3 beaming smiles, 3 sets of smashed legs and 3 beers at the end (1 each as the prize). A great event that really must be in the calender for next year – Spencer

With the first of the club team events on the road upon us the call out for the 12 & 6 stage relays was met with enthusiasm. Enough came forward to field 3 men’s teams and 3 ladies’ teams. That’s our biggest contingent ever at the event and wherever you looked there was sunburst.

To organise the event is chaos with people coming and going for most of the afternoon, but they all turned up. The weather was true early Spring, from sunny spells to a bone chilling breeze, hail and biblical rain we had it all. The big gazebo offered shelter from the conditions as runners tried to stay dry or warm back up. For once, the traffic issues on site were not an issue (the same could not be said for the M6). With old experienced hands and newcomers at the event we drew on all the experience we had at hand, from our non runners guiding and pinning up (thank you Tracey) to the runners who shepherded everyone to the pen for the right times. There were a few incidents of hold your breath, Damian racing to get to the start line before Rob finished, Cliff breaking all known land speed records with an 8-minute short leg (organisers’ timing issues) Daren’s initial 61 minutes plus of glory re-alligned to his run time (again organisers’ timing issues).

Once the provisional results were released an appeal saw the men’s B team reinstated, all of the men’s C team finishers recognised, the timing issues corrected and legs 1 and 2 on the men’s A-team aligned correctly.

Overall a really great day for the club, fielding the strongest and most numbers we have ever had. From Adrian and Amanda charging around on their leg 1’s to every other runner completing at their best all to ensure all the teams finished.

What a day, what a club. We hold our fingers crossed for the 15 that had to drop out on the run up to the event that they may be available for the next event.

Who’s up for 10-ish miles each of unflat cotswolds relay fun in May? Spencer

Enigma Week at the Knees – Marathon Day 7 – 17 March M

25 Dave Fawkner 5:49:17

Entering a marathon the night before after a couple of pints was not my greatest decision. A reasonable first half, followed by a decent walk for the last 13 around Caldecote Lake, Milton Keynes. All good training ready for the next effort.

I hadn’t appreciated the size of this event until picking up my number on the evening before the race. I joined 13,000 others to run through the university city in my first road event of the year – the tarmac & flat course a welcome change from the mud & hills of Burton Dassett a few weeks ago. No great targets in mind other than finishing, so I just enjoyed it, setting out to run at a pace I hoped I could sustain.

The perfect conditions & beautiful architecture of the various iconic colleges must have inspired me along with family support & Rob & Simon’s recent training sessions on the benefits of negative splits. Having some fuel in the tank meant I could up the pace a little in the second half which provided a boost. The great support also helped and I finished feeling human which made for a pleasant change.

From memory, it was expensive to enter, but I felt the overall experience made it a worthwhile venture. If you’re after a PB and enjoy the larger events it should feature on your list.

A frosty start to the day but the sun came out to see us off in the “other” Leicester 10k. This is a closed-road loop winding around Victoria Park and the urban Leicester University Campus. There’s a long incline up to the park which means you can pick up speed in the final 2km back down into the finish area. As long as you’re not chatting about your new shorts, that is.

We all enjoyed this one, good times all round. Tracey and I will be back for the “other other” Tempo Events Big Leicester 10k in April which is the race we meant to sign up for – Chris

Hannigan Challenge Marathon LDWA – 3 March M

  Claudie Combelas 6:52:00

CLAUDIE COMBELAS

After yesterday’s mudfest, I was hoping for an easier run. The day started foggy but soon the sun came out. Alas the hope for less mud was shattered. The bogs had not disappeared overnight. Luckily the hills were fewer and the excellent checkpoints catered for all magnificently.

I was running/walking with Sally Hicks from Kenilworth Runners who I bumped into at the start, and we did hang-around for a very long time at each check point. I was glad of the company as my legs lost the will to live.
A lovely day out though if incredibly slow. One more in the bag.

Belvoir Challenge Marathon – 2 March M

  Claudie Combelas 6:00:35

The muddiest, slippiest, clagiest(?), wettest marathon I can remember. Imagine the Immortal times 2, or a version of the field of doom on A Coventry Way with huge hills or hilly wet and muddy cross-country x 8. You get the idea. I fell over as soon as I stepped on the mud – face first. Luckily I managed to stay upright for the rest of the challenge.

Absolutely chuffed to have finished and ovely to see Liz Pharaoh, albeit briefly, as she disappeared into the distance. For lovers of mud only.

Saddleworth 10 Res’s – 2 March M

  Tony Bowe 8:03:20

A tough classic Marathon challenge over Saddleworth Moors, including 4000ft of elevation, and visiting 10 reservoirs through sleet, snow, mud and bogs. A great event by Craggrunner finishing off with a 3-course meal, and all for £17!
