Once again we
headed north to continue our research into the effects of binge
drinking and running - well if the hotel insists that you stay
from
friday til monday...............! so, after a good night out on
friday,saturday was a "recovery" day re-hydrating and
watching the mile
races on the quayside before an early night.on sunday, the short walk
from our hotel to the start was made in warm sunshine & even with
2hrs to go the crowds of runners preparing were enormous.after
shuffling as close to the start line as possible we were off, albeit at
an inevitably slow pace.the only gripe with this race is that despite
starting at the 6.30m/m mark (never going to manage that for 13 miles
!) there are always "fun runners" & emus stopping and walking in
front of you after 1 mile or less - how do they manage to start so far
up the field ? anyway,as ever superb organisation, fantastic crowds
& bands along the way & a great last mile along the seafront
make this a must do event and resulted in 2 pbs & a fine run
by new
recruit andy miles who had never run beyond 10 miles before, thus giving
us the perfect excuse for a few more beers and a curry on sunday
night.the research continues next year !!

It’s not very often that
you can wake up on the day of a race to be greeted by almost perfect
running
conditions, but by an act of god, fate or whatever, yesterday; the day
of the
Robin Hood Half Marathon we were treated to perfect conditions, cool,
calm
& overcast.
I felt good, training had gone well and injury free, so
I
hoped to run well and get a PB.
Diane; on the other hand has had a few health &
injury
problems over the past few months so her training had been sporadic,
but had
been better over the past few weeks when she started to follow a
run/walk
routine that she found in the Runner’s World “Guide To Running” book,
which
consisted of 10mins run & 1min walk. And having put this method to
the test
a couple of weeks ago at Draycote Water for 2 laps her confidence was
boosted
as she felt comfortable with it.
As we (myself,Diane, her parents & her two brothers)
were
all taking part to raise money for the “Beating Bowel Cancer” charity
it was
important that everything went well.
Over 7000 runners took part in the Half Marathon and,
as
always; the organisation was spot on, from the start to the finish it
was
faultless.
I was having a great run, reaching 5 miles in under
30mins
and 10 miles under the hour was just how I wanted it to go.
The course is by no means flat, as there is a steep
climb at
1.5miles to the castle and a very long, slow hill between 8-9miles, but
there
are good stretches of flat road and some good downhills to make up any
lost
time.
After 10miles the rest of the course is basically flat
so I
just kept going and picked the pace up a bit in the last mile to finish
with a
massive PB of 1hr 18mins 46secs and a chip time of 1.18.38! I couldn’t
believe
it……
Next in was Diane and her brother Jonathan finishing
together in 2.30.30 and 2.30.31 with a chip time for Diane of 2.24.58
giving
her a PB as well by 4mins from following the 10mins run / 1min walk
method.
Her parents and her other brother Martyn all finished
within
their expected times and were very pleased and proud of themselves.
The “Robin Hood” is such a great race that I’m
surprised
that more of us don’t take part as it is less than an hour away and the
support
from bystanders is fantastic.
I’ve taken part since 2001 and all being well; will
continue
to do so for a good few years yet!
PS from Diane
Ladies it really is a great race. I really
enjoyed it last year but even more
this year. The course is very
interesting and has a pretty park to run through. The crowd
support is almost the full 13.1
miles. The finish is fantastic coming
down the field with large crowds on either side and if you like malt
loaf; this
year we had two full size ones in our goody bag. Hope to see more
of you there next year when
I knock another 4 mins off my PB.
