Northbrook AC - The story so far... after 26 years...
Last Updated Jan 2007
2006
Bob Adams:
It’s been
another eventful year for the club. Ian Burgoyne broke the club record at the
London Marathon. Paul Andrew performed at a level we’ve never seen before in a Northbrook vest, winning our 10Km, the Hartshill Heartbreaker and the Kenilworth Half Marathon.
Nathan Holmes has not been far behind Paul, and has been chosen to run for Warwickshire in the
Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships. Becky Smith has also been chosen for this event. The mens team again won the Warwickshire Road
race League, and also won the
Sneyd 10 mile team prize. They finished 2nd in the Cotswold
Hilly 100. In the Birmingham Cross Country League
the mens team were 6th in Division 2 last
season. The ladies team
finished 2nd in the Warwickshire Road
race league, and there was an all ladies team in the Cotswold Hilly 100. The Northbrook 10Km race goes from strength to
strength. I am aware of all the work of the
sub-committee and would like to thank them for all their efforts.
I would also like to thank all our sponsors who have helped us in the last
year. We also organised the Allesley fun Run and a
Birmingham Cross Country League race at Coundon
Park
in the last year. We have a new course on Coundon
Wedge this year. On the social side, last year’s Presentation Night wasn’t an overwhelming success, but
the School Reunion Party was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Tonight is a
chance for members to have their say. Thank you to everyone who put forward
proposals. They will be discussed
later. Thanks for listening
2005
Bob Adams:
"The
last year has been good for the club. Northbrook
won the mens Warwickshire Road Race League and
Cotswold Hilly 100 relay. Also the men are currently 5th in Division
2 of the Birmingham Cross Country League. There were some outstanding
individual performances. Paul Andrew won the Hartshill
Heartbreaker 10 mile race, and was invited to run the Inter-Counties Cross
Country race. Becky Smith was also invited to the Inter Counties race, and ran
an excellent London Marathon time gaining an elite start place for the future.
Many other members ran very good marathons this year. Nathan Holmes was 2nd
in the Kenilworth Half marathon and Paul Kelly again won many age category
prizes. Loretto Denley ran
the 3rd fastest time ever by a UK
female in her age category at the Preston 10
mile race. The Northbrook 10 Kilometre race was selected for the Warwickshire
championships, and was again organised superbly by Loretto
Denley, Tom Gillon, Tony
French and Con McHugh. The change of venue to the Quality Hotel worked well.
Next year we will again host the Warwickshire Championships and be part of the
Warwickshire Road Race League. The race will be known as a 'Family Run' to
attract more runners. Also there will be a 2 Kilometre children's run. Last
year we also successfully hosted the Allesley Fun Run
and a Birmingham League Cross Country fixture at Coundon Park. The latter was a challenge without
the use of Keresley
Grange School,
but Tony French and the whole club coped admirably. Thanks to Nathan Holmes,
Alex Marshall and Sarah McNaney for continuing the speedwork sessions on Wednesday evenings. On the less
positive side, we had a lot of difficulty getting members to run in relay races
this year. The Hilly 100 'B' team was withdrawn at the last minute, and there
was no ladies team. We just managed to get a mens
12-stage relay team, and numbers were down in the Summer Handicap. The
attendance at the club Presentation Evening was disappointing, and the format
may need to be reviewed. This was despite fantastic work by Tony Hoy and his
organisation of the event. I would like to thank the committee for their
efforts this year. We have a challenging year ahead, but we can all help to
make Northbrook the best club to join in Coventry.
Please use this opportunity to voice your comments and suggestions. Thanks for
listening".

Bob Adams:
"The
first thing to say is that I wasn't really planning to be presenting this
report tonight, as I announced 2 years ago that I would be standing down from
the job as Chairman - and I'm still here! I've got to say that I'm glad I was
persuaded to change my mind, as there have been a number of events and
occasions during the past 12 months that have made me very proud of the club.
Firstly, on the running front, the integration of the ex-Masseys
runners has been completed very successfully, and they have all contributed to
making us a stronger team. This fact was illustrated by our promotion to
Division 2 of the mens Birmingham Cross Country
League, and victories in the Hilly 100 relay and the Warks
Road Race League. We also qualified for the National finals of both the 6-stage
and 12-stage road relays. On an individual front, Nathan Holmes, Paul Kelly and
Ian Burgoyne occupied the first 3 places in the Warks
Road Race League standings. The ladies squad has also continued to develop over
the past 12 months. they just missed out on winning
the Warks Road Race League, but I'm confident that
they can go one better in 2005. I'm also certain that they can field an all
ladies team in the Hilly 100 relay, and that they will win it. Only last month
they won the team prize in the Xmas Pudding 10 mile race, and their
determination to improve is demonstrated by the number of ladies joining the speedwork sessions. Another successful event was the second
staging of the Northbrook 10Km race. I know
that Lorretto, being a perfectionist, was not totally
happy with how things went on the day, but I thought it was extremely well organised,
and much appreciated by the runners who took part. Our 10Km race has already
become one of the best events held in the area, and has been selected as the
Warwickshire 10Km Championship race in 2005. We also successfully hosted the Allesley Festival Fun Run, and a Birmingham League Cross
Country race at Coundon Park.
Both of these events showed how well things can be done when the club pulls
together. I'd like to thank Stuart Keen for his hard work organising the
'Grease Night'. Stuart and Diane certainly showed us how rock-and-roll should
be done, and everyone attending had a great night. It is also pleasing that the
speedwork sessions have developed on a Wednesday
evening. This is a result of the efforts of Gareth Knight and Alex Marshall. I
would like to thank last years committee for their
support. Some members are standing down, and I thank them for their efforts.
Tony French did a tremendous job with his risk assessment work at our races,
and has been invited to provide a risk assessment for the National Cross
Country races in Birmingham.
I'd also like to thank Con and Dan McHugh for their continued excellent work
with the website and club magazine. I believe that the club is in good health,
but there are always a few challenges. One of these was our presence at the
Jaguar Sports & Social Club, when membership fees were changed last year.
Prices may go up again, but we need to bear in mind the future of the Jaguar
factory. Also, the congestion in the bar area on Wednesday nights is a problem.
However, I still believe that we will struggle to find a better location.
Please use this opportunity to voice your comments and suggestions. Thanks for
listening". Bob Adams (Chairman)
2003
This year
is the 25th anniversary of the club which was originally founded in
the summer of 1978 as Northbrook Striders.
Successes
so far this year include the hosting a 10K Road Race on June 25th
with 260 entries showing race video on the day, record club members 110, record
number of 19 runners compete in the London Marathon.
Many Massey
Ferguson runners have now integrated well with
the club. Soon, all these runners will be available to compete for Northbrook, and will strengthen the club. The club
performed well through the year, with the ladies section getting stronger, and
there was also individual recognition for Paul Kelly selected as 1st
reserve for the England
veterans cross country team. Paul was also 1st in the Warks Road League, with Rob Barry in 3rd place.
Sid Windridge was ranked in the top 10 U.K. marathon times for his age group, while Loretto Denley was ranked first
in the U.K.
for her age group in the half marathon. Currently the mens
cross country seem sure to gain promotion to Division 2 of the Birmingham
League, after 4th place in Division 3 last year. The ‘B’ team are
leading the field as well, showing our depth of ability. Changes to Jaguar fees
caused discontent this year, as an initial £10 fee and 50p weekly shower charge
was introduced. This was later scrapped and replaced by a general £20 fee, which
would have been better in the first place. The social events were as good as
ever. Highlights were the 25th club anniversary night, with many
former members attending. Also the 70’s night was memorable for the array of wigs and strange costumes. Membership has increased a
lot this year (130). At the end of the
XC season (Feb 04) the club finished 2nd and was promoted into
Division 2. Issues included Jaguar charging 50p per shower. Club sponsors were Brose.
2002
There were
some noteable performances in the Warks
Road Race League in 2002. Paul Kelly won the overall mens
title, and was selected to run for England
(V50’s) after the Nuneaton 10 mile race. Gary
Thomas was awarded 2nd senior mens prize.
Julie Neville won 2nd V45 prize. In the cross-country, Northbrook men had a steady 2002/3 season in Division 3,
with Rob Barry winning 3rd place overall. This season (2003/4) Northbrook are 4th overall with a chance of
promotion in the final race. Dawn O’Shea produced the performance of the year,
finishing the Hawaii Ironman World Triathlon
Championships in 11 hours 30 secs. Dawn was first
British lady, and completed the marathon leg in approx 3hrs 52 min. Our
relationship with sponsors Brose has improved over the year, and we thank Brose
for their contributions to new club vests and Paris marathon
expenses. Northbrook have
promoted 2 races in 2002, the Allesley Fun Run and
The Coundon Hall Park cross-country race (Birmingham
League Division 3). In 2003 Northbrook will
again host the Allesley Fun Run, and a new 10Km race
based at Jaguar. Thanks to Loretto Denley and Tom Gillon for
organising and promoting this. There are still challenges to face this year:
Jaguar are not taking new associate memberships at the
moment, and this could affect new members. Each member will be treated as an
individual, at renewal in October, and this could affect the club adversely.
Discussions between the new committee and Jaguar are needed to discuss this
soon. Also, the Massey Ferguson issues, were
discussed.
2001
This year
the off road routes were closed from 1st March to 29th
May due to Foot and Moutb epidemic in the UK
The ladies
retained the Warwickshire Road Race League trophy, with four ladies in the top
twenty overall. Loretta Denley won her ladies veteran
category in the London Marathon. Dawn O'Shea was selected for the
inter-counties cross-country team. The men finished 3rd in the
Warwickshire Road Race League, with Paul Kelly 2nd overall.
Unfortunately, the mens squad were relegated from
Division 2 of the Birmingham Cross Country League, but are now 4th
overall in Division 3, with Rob Barry in the overall lead. Rob won the first
Division 3 race at Senneleys
Park.
Mick O'Shea was selected for the inter-counties cross-country team. Northbrook has hosted two running events this year. The Allesley Fun Run was a success, with 200 entries, raising
funds for Northbrook and local charities. The
hosting of a Birmingham League fixture at Coundon
Park
was also good for the clubs profile. We are happy to have new sponsors this
year: Brose agreed to give us funding, from which we were able to purchase a
set of club jackets, and a club tent. Thanks to Steve and Mick O'Shea, and Tony
French for organising this. Dave New is our new Brose Liaison Officer, and
communications with Brose should improve after a slow start.
2000
Starting with the successes: the ladies
team won the senior and veteran categories of the Warks
Road Race League. The mens team
were also strong in the Warks Road Race League,
with Mick O’Shea winning the overall individual prize, which was fantastic!
Also, the mens team qualified for the National
12-stage road relay for the first time ever. More disappointingly, it looks
certain that Northbrook will be relegated from
Division 2 of the Birmingham XC League this season. There are many reasons, eg. Injuries, loss of form, etc; however, the club has done
well to compete at such a high standard for so long. Interval
training on Wednesday nights show that everyone is putting lots of
effort into improving their running. Hopefully, there will be a strong team in
Division 3 next season. The main goal though, is that everyone enjoys their
running!
Northbrook are now settled at the Jaguar Sports & Social Club. The
website continues to attract new members and keeps other in touch with whats going on.
The average age of club members increases every year!
1999
Mens and
Ladies race performances through the year were the best ever! We are now
settled at Jaguar, and there is a good friendly atmosphere. Thanks to the
committee for their help last year. The number of proposals received this year
shows that members care about the way the club is run. The changes seen
recently in the club mean that we are now dealing with complex issues. This is
the year that the club started its website thanks to Con McHugh.
http://www.northbrookac.org.uk
1998-1999
This was
the first full year at Jaguar. Membership had increased from 60 to 80 (approx).
More ladies had joined, and were making use of other facilities at Jaguar. The
highlight of the year was Northbrook’s -
winning the mens and ladies first ever Warwickshire
Road Race Leagues. It was good to see the members with the winners shields
pictured in the Coventry Evening Telegraph. The ladies also won 3rd
prize in the Warwickshire Cross Country Champs. The men competed well in
Division 2 of the Birmingham Cross Country League. In the first season in
Division 2 (1997/98) they finished 7th. This season (1998/99) is
more competitive with the club finishing 9th
Our new Kenyan athlete, Josphat Rotich won the last race, but strength in depth is lacking
at the moment. The club is getting older and younger runners are needed. Also,
more structured training could improve performances. However, the most
important thing is that everyone enjoys their running.

Division II first time ever in 14 year history.
1997
This year
was one of the most eventful in the Clubs history. The Telepost
club was sold by BT to private owners and the
consensus amongst club members was that we were not very welcome with poor
facilities especially for ladies. The Telepost club
was closed for closed for alterations with the
club meeting at the Nugget. The owners clearly favoured football as the main
sport. There was an EGM held in November with a vote to Move Jaguar Want to
grow the club. The decision, backed by 90% of those present was to move to the
Jaguar Sports Club, Browns Lane, by all except
compost corner. Very quickly the club atmosphere was restored and the
ladies facilities were excellent and ensured that after many years of decline
the ladies section started to grow.

1978
The club
began like so many other clubs at the start of the road running boom in the
1980s. Northbrook running club was founded,
and based at the BT Telepost club, Northbrook Road.
The club was originally known as Northbrook Striders and was started by 12 or
so local runners who wanted to run without the fuss that sometimes goes with
members of bigger clubs. . The name changed to Northbrook Athletic as the club
became more ambitious and sought open status and AAA membership. The club was
considered then as is now as one of the most welcoming clubs in the area
enjoying beautiful scenery on for its runs.
